Kohls…the good and the bad

I do like their Kohl’s Cares program, and that they still have a DEI statement and a sustainability pledge. It’s nice to see a company that remains committed to the community. It’s enough of a reason for me to give them another look when I need something.

Back from Kohls. Got pants for my husband, not the ones he saw on line. Of course, they are Lee brand and not eligible for any coupons- UGH.

I may be wrong and I’m sure they are very nice pants but if Lee brand are not eligible - I mean they are not a hard to get designer brand! - than what brands DO count - does the Kohl’s brand count??

The coupon would have worked on the sonoma brand (which is the Khols brand)

I get frustrated with their pricing. For example pre season I bought a dress for $26, it was too big and to get it replaced with the right size the price was up to $70. Now the dress is ‘on clearance’ at $56. Surely clearance should be the cheapest price possible?

I once did an experiment and kept a few items in my online cart. Every week the deal changed percentage off, but the price remained the same. I really only buy bras and underwear, online, so I can just repurchase from my old orders. It’s 5 minutes away and I haven’t been inside in years.

You sound like me! I used to buy my kids clothes and housewares there. Again, haven’t been in years. Logged online and looked and some items and their prices aren’t great. I’d rather do a Macy’s or Belk sales and get better stuff for less.

I’ve never liked Kohl’s for me but occasionally will get bras or housewares there. DH seems to find things he likes on sale. The place seemed deserted when I stopped by a couple of weeks ago hoping to find a gift for someone.

I went to Kohls this week and bought two dresses, a blouse aqnd a jean jacket. I LOVE going through their crazy clearance racks. I find the best stuff in there.

I also never was Kohl’s frequent customer. For good affordable quality items I always prefered Macy’s sales, TJMaxx, Marshall’s or Nordstrom Rack. Occasionally got some things years ago at the store for kids who were growing at that time. If it will be closed I would not notice.

Back in Chicagoland, I routinely shopped at Kohls’ for decades for clothes and housewares. There were four Kohl’s within a 15 minute drive of our house. Two were my preferred shops depending on where else I wanted to go. (A third was in Cook County and had an extra 1% sales tax so I seldom went there.) At least half my wardrobe was from Kohl’s, including lingerie and sleepwear. I routinely stopped by when the 30% coupons came; there was always something I could use. When son became adult, he liked their selection best.

Then we moved to San Diego. There was only one Kohl’s within a fairly reasonable driving distance. It was smaller than any of the ones I used to shop at. Selection got less and less. It was convenient during the pandemic to order online and pick up in the parking lot. And I sent son various household items when he was setting up his apartment in Seattle. Then the selection got worse and worse, and the coupons didn’t work on most stuff I wanted.

And now it’s permanently closed so my Kohl’s era is likely done for good. (Even though they keep sending me 30% coupons.) And I am not interested in the new store card but at least didn’t get tricked into turning it into a regular credit card.

I’ll never forget walking through JC Penney to find a tie for my son and my then 11 year old daughter stopping in her tracks, looking around with big eyes and saying “We’re shopping in Burt Hummel’s closet” (Glee reference from my kid with an amazingly dark sense of humor since she was 4). I had a flashback to that moment this week walking through Kohl’s. Definitely gives Burt Hummel vibes.

Another thing that annoys me with kohls is the online orders. Some items are store pick up only, some are ship to store and some are online only. Sometimes I struggle to make up the minimum shipping amount.

I used to go to Kohls from time to time because it was my closest no-fee/no-packaging Amazon return location. While in the story for a return, I’d sometimes look at the different items for sale. Without exception, everything I checked was substantially more expensive for comparable quality than other alternative shopping locations. I didn’t see the point of shopping there, which I expect relates to why the store is failing financially, and why Kohls has been closing many stores including the one I visited. Many other department store type businesses have had similar outcomes – Sears, JC Penny, Niemen Marcus, Lord & Taylor, Montgomery Ward, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc. Kohls stock price is currently the lowest it’s been since pre-Internet 1990s.

Add me to the used to shop there a lot but rarely go there anymore. Prices don’t seem competitive any more, selection and quality not as good. Last month I was looking for bedding and was at a store next door so decided to stop in. It’s in a shopping center and has 2 entrance door areas. One set of doors was closed. When I got inside I realized that was probably because they didn’t have staff at the register near it. Few employees, few customers and stock was very limited. It was sad really comparing to the old days.

Interesting that you posted this now. I was there just a few days ago looking for a few summer clothing items and left empty handed, thinking that everything looked extremely boring, was very downmarket, and not particularly nice. I found a pair of jeans, but the coupon excluded them, of course, and I didn’t want to pay full price. It’s Kohls, so I am not spending $70 on jeans.

I used to get all kinds of stuff there. There were good items in the teens’ sections. I was actually shocked at how little there was. Absolutely nothing cute for teen girls, but just a few years ago there were good choices. There were fun games, good housewares, good linen selection, and so forth. I was super disappointed.

I hate shopping online for everything. I like to be able to see things, especially during the holidays when I am looking for gifts I didn’t think of. I hope they can turn it around because I considered it a good local resource.

We don’t have a kohls in town. Nearest one is 50+ miles away. So I didn’t get my kohls card until later - maybe 2012-2015? But in the beginning I loved it. I found all kinds of things and seemed to get it for pennies. Eventually, I got less and less. Now, it’s pretty rare for me to go in, and even more rare that I actually buy anything. Sort of makes me sad.

A number of years ago, I took one of my nieces for an outing…lunch and a trip to Kohls. She always got hand me downs (nice ones) from my daughter…but I thingy she might like an inexpensive shopping trip. This was when Kohls had a great teen/preteen section and great sales. I told her she could get anything she wanted to get. She had so much fun. I think I spent under $100 and really got her a whole new summer wardrobe.

One thing I do appreciate is that Kohl’s usually has a selection of dresses. I find places usually have very casual or very formal dresses, if they have them at all. Kohl’s is one of the only places that has a work/work casual selection of dresses.

The Kohl’s is a little too far for me to shop for things like socks, but I used to like to go there a couple of times a year. Haven’t been in a long time but I do see a lot of their stuff at the thrift stores (sometimes with new tags on them). I usually don’t buy them as I find their polos a little short. I like the Land’s End or LLBean polos more, and they are usually the same price at the thrift store.

I have a Marshall’s very close so go there for socks, a plain shirt, other bargains.
