L-dub housing really that bad?

virtuouso:
First, congrats on getting into the best college at Yale. I’m SY '10 and can guarantee that you’ll love Saybrook. As for L-dub, it’s true that it sucks compared to the rest of Old Campus housing (but, on the bright side, it’s far better than freshman housing at pretty much any other university). Rooms in L-dub are smaller than those in other buildings - the common rooms are decent-sized, but the bedrooms are tiny. Basically, you end up spending very little time in your bedroom - all you use it for is sleep (and possibly to do homework if your desk is in your bedroom). Having a common room means that the size of the bedroom is much less important than it would be otherwise. As far as other negative factors go, there is a bit of a cockroach infestation (it’s not too bad though, I saw about 10 all year), and sometimes, for inexplicable reasons, it will start to smell (though most of the time it will be fine). There is a major upside to L-dub, however. It’s the most social dorm on Old Campus, meaning that people from other colleges hang out there a lot, and there’s always stuff going on. And, in the long run, it’s not that bad. I’m glad to be moving into Saybrook next year, but I was perfectly happy in L-dub.
