Lack of Air Conditioning at Boarding Schools

If my son gets kicked out, I’ll get back to you as to what happens if parents don’t pick up their kids within 24 hours.

ac isn’t a big deal in new england… we don’t need it. at my house, we don’t have any ac. it’s a waste of money. heat isn’t that extreme in ANDOVER MASSACHUSETTS!!

(i live near andover)

bring a fan, crack a window, and you’ll be good to go. :]

Well it’s supposed to be 95 in Andover the day I get there. That seems pretty hot lol.

Really? In NYC this past weekend it was in the 60s one day and in the 70s the others, which surprised me.

New England Weather - always changing. Highs in 60s on Saturday, close to 100 today.

I brought my daughter to start training with her collegiate gymnasatics team yesterday…95 degrees…no AC in gym (or any other part of the athletic building for that matter). She’s never had AC in her club gym, either. It’s NH. Too much expense for too short a period of time.

Remember, you are talking about an OLD New England school. The buildings would have to be retrofitted for AC–an expensive proposition. In the minds of frugal Yankees, that would not be money well spent.

i live on the north east coast and it can get really hot during summer. we turn on the ac all the time. like today is supposed to be in the mid 90’s

Well, that’s funny… I’M at Andover Summer Session…

Put a fan on your pillow. :)

OMG, I ALSO went to Duke TIP East Session One!!! The knife-talk is true, and along with that warning, I would also like to say: don’t gamble. It’s stupid. It’s related, trust me; also, don’t irritate Sam the OSC… he will eat you, for breakfast, along with a few other TIPsters. Also, win Quadfest. It’s fun. That’s all!

SsPixie, that’s what I did last night. What dorm are you in? What classes are you taking?

does anyone know if exeter has air conditioning?

i can deal with it for a few weeks… i guess that’s the only time i will miss it (june and sept… so like 5 weeks)

I’m bringing a fan.

@SsPixie17x: Picked up D’yer, Jr. yesterday morning and drove with him to the beach. The stories from Duke East TIP keep coming. My favorite one ties in both knife-expulsions and Quadfest. His dorm, Alspaugh, won the prize for “most congenial” and “best cheer.” I forget the official cheer. Their unofficial cheer, however, was “Alspaugh! Alspaugh! We’ve got knives!”

Apparently there were other groups on campus during the same timeframe. There was some American Dance Festival conference and a group of young debaters. That group was called “The Master Debaters.” D’yer, Jr. finds this to be amusing.

I never gave this much thought until now, but as a Southern-raised kid attending an Episcopal private school, TIP was his first encounter with a significant Jewish population (not counting a 3 hour scrabble tournament at a synagogue several years ago). I grew up in a predominantly Jewish community and most of my family is Italian – which, socially speaking, is pretty much the same as being Jewish without the Yiddish. He’s now got a whole new bunch of friends from TIP who – apart from his roommate – are all Jewish. At one point, he accused me (only half jokingly) of hiding him from Jewish kids his whole life.

Oh, and on a final note, this is Sam the Evil OSC’s final year at TIP. He was amazed that I knew about Sam and his reputation. I just told him that Sam’s world famous.

don’t be misguided, new england summer’s are still brutal w/out AC. exeter has AC for all academic buildings, but not for dorms [because we’re usually out of school by the time it gets really hot.] definitely bring fan/ac if you can, because sleeping at night will be painful if you have a high room.

D’yer-Maker: Dude, it’s Sam’s final year? Oh my God, I cannot believe I didn’t know that! As for the cheer, “Alspaugh! Alspaugh! We’ve got knives!” completely beats out their official cheer: “Alspaugh-licious.”

Jonathan1: I’m taking French and Physics. Both are killing me. French because it’s far too easy, Physics because it is murderously hard. I’m living in Nathan Hale, which is the center of the universe during the regular year, but incredibly boring right now. Either way, I’m still unreasonably delighted to be back on campus, because my addictive personality is fostering a serious codependency on Andover. I mean, after all, we are as old as America. Happy Independence Day!

So, I’m wondering how all you kids at summer school in Massachusetts are doing today…it is truly oppressive!

I hope the teachers are taking it easy on you. Take lots of showers. Eat ice cream. Don’t move if you don’t have to.

Stay cool!

Oh, FCS – it’s July in NE! Suck It Up and get on with it.

No a/c, waah, waah, waah.
