I was amazed at the difference the first time I had my brows shaped. It was like I had a face lift. I couldn’t believe the difference that little extra arch made. Now my brows are practically non-existent and they are just getting longer. I joke with the aesthetician that I could braid them. Why don’t your lashes get longer instead of your brows?

What about those fine facial hairs near the jaw lines ? It is especially noticeable with back lighting.

My eyebrows have a life of their own. They are getting longer and more wiry by the month. As much trouble as a lawn to maintain.

Kind of and kind of not off topic. I’ve had my nails done at three different places in the last six months, trying to find a place that I was happy with (finally did!). Every technician I’ve been to has been Asian. I notice that none of them have hair on their arms. Do they shave them, or are Asian women less prone to have hair growth on their arms?

My hair is extremely light colored, but sometimes I think my arms might look more defined (especially now that I have muscle definition) if I didn’t have so much hair on them.

Also, regarding brows. I occasionally get mine waxed, but mostly to get the fuzzies that grow underneath the brow. I find that my eye shadow stays on better if there’s less fuzzy. Anyway, again, my brows are so light colored that you really can’t see them. I have tried and tried to fill them in with a pencil, but I’m just not coordinated in that department and cannot get them even. I’d be willing to deal with upkeep of eyebrows if I could find someone or some place that would maintain them for me with some color and shape. Where would I find some place like that? The place where I get my nails done, only waxes.

My mother was a beautician and dyed eyebrows all the time. Of course that was years ago, but I assume people who color hair also do brows.

mimk6 - mine too. I’ve always had the Ali McGraw/early Brooke Shields look, lots and lots of dark eyebrow.

My eyebrows are light colored and rather thin. I bought some Rapid Lash at Ulta and was too afraid to use it on my eyelashes (my eyes are easily irritated), so I started using it on my brows. It works. My brows appear darker and fuller. I’ve had them dyed before but it doesn’t last very long.

I not only use a magnifying mirror to see my lip hairs but I also use a flashlight! My hairs are dark but relatively sparse, so it’s easier to see when there’s a light on them. I occasionally pluck one but I have found it’s easier to pick up the smaller ones with no-wax strips.

@teriwtt - scary and drastic sounding, but you could get tattooing done to darken your brows. I work with a woman from South America and she says makeup tattoos are common in her country. She has a very subtle golden brown line above her lash line that I would have never thought was a tattoo. It looks great! She said it was painless too because they use some form of anesthesia for it.

teriwtt, Asians in general have less body hair than Caucasians.

teriwitt – Instead of a pencil, consider a brow powder – more like eyeshadow and easier to control. They even have kits that come with stencils!

I’m actually not much of a ‘makeup’ girl…but I love products, the cleverer the better! The cosmetic companies are always coming up with ideas to make life just that much easier and techniques that really work. Some fail in the real world (heated eyelash curlers, y’all? Really?) but others are either great or just plain fun. One of the delights of being the mom of a teenage girl is that she gets to be my guinea pig for things that look really neat but that I (48!) don’t have the guts or the complexion to try.

Re: Arm hair. They told me when I was young, that my Quaker great-grandma used to toast hers off at the woodstove…

I have to wax/thread my upper lips and under arms, and thread my eyebrows, every week. Else it turns into a mess. I also get my arms and legs waxed every two weeks, although the dark hair growth starts showing within a week. I really need advice on how to handle this before I go away to college in the fall. How can I take care of it all in college, while living on campus, without having to go to a salon every week?

A female friend of my son goes to a salon every week at college for exactly this reason. Find a low-cost salon and stick with it.

coldplay, you could buy your own waxing kit, my SIL is licensed and bought me the entire set up, having had it done a few times, I was able to replicate a decent job, a bit slower, a bit messier, but way cheaper!

Also, do any of you know how people manage this in college with communal toilets for the whole floor? I’m assuming it will be a difficult task with people around.

I would be really careful and do research before getting any kind of permanent make-up (which is what the eyeliner tattoo is called). A friend of D2 had it done and D2 went with her to offer support. The practitioner (who wasn’t a doctor) used a type of gel anesthesia, which must have worn off because the procedure was very, very painful.

Also, be sure you don’t get any kind of tattooing that’s too faddish. Can you imagine if we had gotten tattoos for eyeliner like Elizabeth Taylor wore in Cleopatra? It was the rage in the 1960s, but my goodness – not any more!!

As long as we’re complaining about post-menopausal hair issues, may I put in a crabby word about the pure white eyebrow hairs that are putting me in Mrs. Claus territory? My hairdresser has colored my brows a few time with the same stuff she uses on my hair, but the result is a little too dark and then wears off really fast anyway. I use a Paula’s Choice brow color wand in blonde when I want to disguise the white hairs without getting too dark a result overall, but I resent having to use one more cosmetic just to stay even with the overall deterioration! Grrrr.

Anyone, please?

Welcome to my world
I spend way more time these days on maintenance than I ever did when I was young. It’s exhausting. I can see why some women just throw in the towel.

I have my face waxed every month and I’m fair skinned and haired. Ever since menopause…even inside my nose. Can hardly keep up with it!

Coldplay, there are a lot of things that people sharing communal bathrooms wind up sharing.

And you can always wax while you’re in your room.
