Ladies: the skirt length situation

august:
Definitely Chicos.

This is all very helpful, folks. I guess I remember wearing mini-skirts in hs and never being able to sit down. I do see that Talbots online has simplified things. In their dresses section they have two categories: long and short.

Coldwater Creek is another company I like for our age group. At least my age group lol.

Ahhhhh, “the” look isn’t based on long on short, it’s based in fullness. Skirts are now full, feminine, soft…Current fashion dictates that the skirt be worn with heels (heeled sandals) and a short jacket with round collar. The short skits are not flattering if you have fuller legs, but the “in” skirts can also be longer, full, gauze, flowing…

IMHO, these look good on tall and short women and girls…have fun this summer, ladies!

long skirts are in this season … especially peasant skirts. Even longer shorts are in (look at gouchos, which I think are ugly, and bermuda shorts).

I dunno re the full skirt. I have one of those flowery ones, silk and not wild or anything, but it still looks a bit too ethnic to me for a very fancy wedding, even with a short jacket. The long dress I have in mind is narrow, I’m afraid.

Sigh.

Your silk print skirt with a little silk sweater in black or a brilliant color, heels, maybe a shawl if it’s still cool, some nice jewelery sounds good to me.

Thanks, momrath! I will have to do a trying-on session here at home. Too bad d is away at college and can’t offer advice. :frowning: The digital camera has been used for this purpose in the other direction. ;)

Btw, cathymee, I like your handkerchief hemline idea. If I can find one of these it will solve the problem. All crises should be this easy!

I wear only long skirts. I’m 5’7" and and it’s a good look for me. Brown corduroy and blue denim are my favorites. I have bought long skirts at Lands’ End, Old Navy (you have to hit it right), even Sears.

I don’t care what the world wears. I have a “uniform” and stick to what works for my figure. I guess when you’re in your 50s you have enough self-esteem and fashion sense that you don’t care what everyone else is wearing.

In fall and winter I like long, colorful scarves, which I drape around my neck and tie low between my chest and waist. It attracts the eye up and down and really adds to the long look.

Oh, my favorite fashion book: “Does This Make Me Look Fat?” by Leah Feldon.

Yay, Kinshasa! I’m with you! I’m 5’8" and also only wear long skirts. Short skirts look awful on me (and don’t even ask about those dreadful cropped pants). Old Navy has a nice long linen skirt right now in good colors with a little ruffle at the bottom. I got black. I also have a wonderful beige linen skirt from last summer from Eddie Bauer.

I also like scarves. Also don’t care what everyone else is wearing. My dad used to say to me (when I was a silly young teenager saying “but everyone’s doing it”): “Well if everyone jumped off a cliff, would you do that too?” My opinion of cropped pants.

Cropped pants are terrible. They shorten your line and make you look dumpy (well at least me).

I also have issues with short-sleeved shirts that are available now. Almost all of them have this slanted too-short cut that displays your upper arm. This is the case even with larger sizes! What are they thinking?!? No woman over size 12 wants to display her upper arms.

And then there is the spandex in everything. I could go on and on. I actually find quite a few nice things in all natural fabrics at Target.

I have always been in favor of short skirts under all circumstances.

tsdad:

But would they look good on you? That’s the yardstick we’re applying here. :)

“I guess when you’re in your 50s you have enough self-esteem and fashion sense that you don’t care what everyone else is wearing.”

Hmm. I felt this way in my late 40s. Now I seem to enjoy the idea that I am not going to look like my grandmother! It can be fun to get the occasional fashionable item.

In the case of this particular wedding, I have gone all the way back to middle school. I do want to fit in! It is a very conservative crowd and a very ritzy place. All I want to do is be inconspicuous. ;)

Don’t get me started on sleeves. I’ve built some nice triceps and it’s tough finding sleeves that aren’t too tight.
