LAFAYETTE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Part I!

Hi Connaid,

For getting a laptop, you are on your own for that. As you probably know, the main choice you have to make in getting your son a laptop is deciding whether you should get a PC or a Mac. The two have various advantages/disadvantages, and if you ask me, it is mostly personal preference. A simple “mac vs. pc” sort of google search will get you the statistics and hardware information of each, so that you can make a decision.

At Lafayette, Information Technology Services (ITS) has a help desk that provides technology assistance to students with computer problems. Most people’s problems are able to be solved over the phone, but if necessary, they have staff members that will work with you. In my experiences, ITS has been reliable.

Taylor

thank you so much for the quick reply! We are planning on getting him a Mac as his graduation present and didn’t know whether to go through Lafayette or Apple… now I know. thanks!

Hello captainclueless,

I’m Brazilian and currently I am studying Civil Engineering at Tennessee Technological University, however I want to transfer to Lafayette College. I’m enrolled at the Honors Program and I have a GPA of 3.7 out of 4.0.

So, what are my chances to get in?

I really appreciate your help.
Thank you!

Sorry othonlima, but so far i’ve never heard of a transfer international student at Lafayette.

Cell Phone Service?

Can anyone comment on the best iphone coverage on Lafayette campus and in Easton? Our AT&T phones worked during our tour everywhere except inside of one building. Does Verizon or another carrier have better coverage?

Hello Taylor -
I’m a parent of a hs Junior and have a few questions…

  • Is it worth visiting Laf in the summer? What would a tour/info. session be like vs. if we wait until September?
• How is a sleepover arranged? Are there limited dates?
  • What about observing a class? Is this something that would be booked in advance?
    Thank you.

@JungleLand - I’m sure Taylor can add more, but I am the parent of a student who will be a freshman Lafayette in the fall so I think I can help with some of your questions. We always liked to visit schools when they were in session and the students were around. In touring a number of the LACs, we found that many of them really had a personality or vibe – some that my D liked, and others which she really didn’t. I don’t think you can get the best sense of the school by looking at the buildings and some summer session students. Also, sleepovers and observing classes do need to be arranged in advance with admissions. My D arranged to shadow a student for a day and went to a number of classes, breakfast, lunch etc. with a student and her friends – it was a great day and the people she met and classes she attended were a big reason she gravitated to Lafayette (she did not make arrangements in time to do an overnight – fortunately shadowing a student worked out well for her). Good luck as you start this process.

My S is a junior. He and I visited LC in April and he really liked the friendly vibe there. He’s an artist who may want to study history, film, or biology in addition to art. He’s not a super “artsy” kind of guy, but very creative and equal friends with fellow artists and jocks at his high school. Do you know people like this at LC and are they happy there?

happy1 - thank you for all the information - very helpful. Good luck to you D.

Hello :)

wonderful thread !

How often students visit NYC or Philadelphia during weekends?

is it a popular activity to hang out in big cities? :)

My son was in NYC three times this year (sophomore) for the quidditch tournament, a December college sponsored shopping/site seeing trip, and a spring theater trip with a class. He went to Philly a few times for concerts but thinks he will go more frequently when he has a car available. I think the location between the two major cities is definitely one of the major positives of Lafayette.

@lotsofquests - My D will be starting Lafayette in the fall and she played Quidditch in HS – but more to have fun with friends than anything else (although the team did play in the world cup). Just curious, how serious is the Lafayette team?
@Jungleland - thanks

Can you tell me about how laundry, bathrooms, kitchen, printers, etc. work?

@happy1
Sorry, I have absolutely no clue about any club/varsity sports. none.

@xskybirdx
There are laundry rooms in each building. Some buildings a laundry room in each floor. They are free to use (coin less) so you wont need to bring quarters :D

Bathrooms are communal and single sex in all the buildings except suites (you share the bathroom with your suitemates with the exception of soles hall where suites have bathrooms outside of the suite). Aside from that, Keefe Hall is the only building, as far as I know, which has individual bathrooms.

Most of the buildings have a kitchenette in each floor (as far as I know, Easton Hall is the only one which has one big kitchen in the basement). The suites have kitchenettes in them.

printing is free on campus. You can find computer labs all over the place. There are 5-6 printers at Skillman Library (open 8am-1am), 1 at Kirby Library (open 9am-10pm). 1 at Farinon Computer Lab (open 7am-2am), 1 in pardee computer lab (not sure of the hours), 1 in marquis computer lab (open 24/7. only closed on Lafayette-Lehigh home games, and All college day). I’m only familiar with 2nd floor of Acopian Engineering Center (open 24/7) since I’m a Mechanical Engineer, but 2nd floor has 4 printers. I’m sure there are more in each department/floor. That’s all I remember at the moment, there must be more places though.

If anyone wants to know more about reslife stuff, here’s a link you might find handy. You can also put preferences when you fill out the dorm room/roommate stuff later in the summer.

Happy1, I will try to answer from my iPad but I have a tendency to hit something on the touch screen and lose my message, so I might have to wait u til I can get on my computer tomorrow.

Happy1, I think the quidditch club is pretty laid back, more social than atheletic. They do practice 3 times a week but not everyone can make it to the practices each time. My s has had late classes all 4 semesters. They have not had many matches. I had hoped to see them play Family Weekend but it was cancelled because of the unexpected snow. The tournaments are not well publicized and they didn’t get notified of several until it was too late to make arrangements to go. My son has made several good friends through playing. Your daughter should definitely check it out.

^^^Thanks so much, I’ll pass the info. along to my D.

Hi Crosbysmom,

Unfortunately, I really don’t have any information with regards to optimal cell phone coverage. I personally have verizon and it has been fine, but if you want to compare deals I suggest you contact the phone companies directly

Taylor

Hi Allboysmom,

Lafayette has a wide variety of people, and while there are tons of sciencey people, there is definitely a share of artsy students as well. I’m sure your son will find his “crowd” at Lafayette. It’s a pretty diverse mix at Lafayette in terms of personality.

Taylor

Hi Jungleland,

Happy1 pretty much said everything you need to know about visitations/sleepovers/observations. They definitely need to be planned in advance via the admissions office. Also, I highly recommend you visit in the fall (starting August 27th) rather than the summer, because that way you will get a better sense of what the school atmosphere is like…if you go in the summer, you don’t quite get the full experience of the school. Let me know if you have any other questions, sorry it took me so long to get back to you!
