LAFAYETTE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Part I!

Hi, I have a question about the dorm life and dorm selection at Lafayette. I just applied ED to lafayette for fall 2012 and I’m waiting to hear my results. I was just wondering about housing at lafayette:

1) I heard that the best dorm at Lafayette for freshman (room size, fun, proximity to classes) is South. However, I was reading reviews about South, and I saw that they said something about during Interim (?) in January, students have to move out of their South dorms or find someone to live in them or something? I was very confused about what they meant by this so I was wondering if you could explain the situation in South

2) Also, if you don’t believe south is the best dorm, can you give me your opinion on the nicest freshman dorm in your opinion in terms of room size, cleanliness, proximity to classes, and social life?

Thanks,

hey, i’ve also applied ED and awaiting my decision.
where are you from?
what were your testing scores and gpa?
thanks…
let’s hope we get in :)

when are the ED decisions expected to be released??

If you are an engineering major:
study, sleep and socialize - pick two
If you are also a D1 athlete:
sports, study, sleep, socialize - you can still only pick two.
Several LC athletes are also engineering majors but it is VERY difficult. Go in with your eyes open. LC is great, their engineering dept is fantastic and the athletes are super. It is the rare bird who can do all this well, however.

I got a 2040 on my SAT and I have a 3.7 GPA. How about you?

Hello everyone,

As some of you may know, finals at Lafayette begin this Monday. To prevent myself from distraction, I have decided to not be checking this forum until December 19. All unanswered questions will be addressed on that day.

Thanks for understanding,

Hi Taylor,

The best with the finals this coming week. When you do see this I have a question about the role of extra-curricular activities in high school and their role in admission. How important are they and in your opinion how much weight is give to them over scores, GPAS and recco letters?

Thanks

About LC engineering, here are my two cents:
We are far away from LC and when we visited, the admission director was very kind and asked us what he could do for us. We want to know more about the engineering programs. So he arranged an engieering professor to talk to us. They were surprized that we visited only U Penn, Swarthmore and LC, not the traditional four colleges (LC, Lehigh, Bucknell and Nova) there. I feel that LC has decent engineering programs. There are four majors and the best are Civic and Mechanical. In fact, there are too many mechanical eng. students, relative to their professor distribution. I saw some visiting mechanical eng. faculty from its web site. I like the conbination of liberal arts and engineering. However, the LC engineering programs are very traditional and have less requirement of liberal arts than many other universities. I was thinking to use LC as a backup college for my S, but now he has been picked up by his first choice college.

I like LC excel scholar program. But the program is quite limited. The professor said that each excel scholar student has to be picked up by a professor, and each professor usuallly has about 2-3 excel sholars. So I have a feeling that LC engineering professors may not be very active for research. For about 600 engineering students and about 40 professors, only a small proportion of engineering students can be an excel sholar. I really hope that LC can have a program like Harvey Mudd that each engineering students can involve with research or projects.

For the most part, what akbear has said is true. LC engineering is slightly traditional in the sense that there isn’t much of Liberal Arts. I’m perfectly happy with it though.

As for EXCEL, of the 600 students, not all of them want to be Excel scholars, and some may want to do Excel in different departments. I know a few brilliant engineers who did Excel in Art department for a couple summers. There are people who just want to go home and enjoy the summer (which is perfectly fine), and people who have never tried getting an Excel. Last summer, I didn’t have an excel but I talked to a professor and I did research on stuff that I was interested in and the professor guided me on it. It was not excel, but it was pretty awesome. If the student is willing to go and talk to the professor, they can get the opportunity to do research.

Also, Lafayette has AB Engineering Studies major, in addition to the four BS Engineering degrees (Civil and Environmental, Chemical and Biomolecular, Mechanical, and Electrical and computer).

My son is currently a junior. I was wondering if it makes sense to have a discussion with a admission counsellor at LC to determine if he stands a chance. Can you let me know if that makes sense? Will LC entertain that?

I have no idea if admissions would do that, you can always call and ask (although I’d wait until this admissions cycle is complete to do that). In general, I found that admissions departments suggest that people apply and see what happens. I’d suggest talking to your son’s guidance counselor and/or looking at a few of the books or stats online. I found that it is very helpful to do some upfront research on any school your child considers to see if they are in the ballpark. These stats from the Lafayette’s website may help.

Has anybody received their ED decision yet/ does anybody know what we will be notified?

i haven’t received my ED yet, I think they are supposed to come tomorrow the 15th if you met the nov 15 priority deadline

It is my understanding that they send it out snail mail on the 15th so we should get it a couple of days later.

will they just send email notification to ED applicants, or are we supposed to check the status check website?

See above…I was told that decisions come by snail mail…but we’re going to keep checking the email just in case!!

the the site it says

“Early Decision Priority applications must be postmarked. If your Early Decision application is completed and sent by Nov. 15, you will be notified of your admission decision by Dec. 15. If you are applying for financial aid and have met the filing deadlines, your financial aid award will be included”

however, lower on the page it says december 15th-decision letters mailed. So I don’t know I’m confused if you find out today or if they are mailed today.

I called admissions today and they said decisions are mailed on the 15th. If you hear anything different, please let me know. Otherwise, we sit and wait!

Has any one received EDI adcom decision yet? I have not received any information from Lafay.

Do the adcom send their decisions via email or post?
