Last year's shopping, checklists, and bedding threads.

When we picked up DS from school in May, he mentioned that he had been ridiculed all year by his suitemates for his rock hard mattress. Apparently, I had been remiss in not providing a mattress topper his first two years. Well, we moved him back in this weekend and made up his bed with a brand new fiber fill topper. The thing felt so luxurious I am truly concerned that he’ll never get up for class. But wouldn’t you know that his bed is once again the subject of conversation-- this time because it’s overly comfy

I haven’t read this whole thread, so this may be on the list but due to this flu season I’m adding: thermometer.

Is that an ad^^^^??? Its posted on like 10 forums!

I would suggest Airborne and zinc to ward off the bugs.

I bought 2 sets of sheets, a comforter, and an extra blanket for my son. He is always cold here at home, so I bought accordingly. Well, 2 schools and 3 dorms later, he hasn’t needed the extra blanket because the dorm rooms have been so hot that he needs to open the window, even in winter! I bought 2 sets of sheets in case he got sick. Never opened that 2nd set of sheets, either. So, at least for guys, I would say, just get the minimum.

^^^So true. My DS’ down comforter is still in my linen closet.

Before my older one went to collage, I purchased really special Amulet for him to have will power to study, which is so important. Then from time to time, I would get him some new good luck charms from http://www.bestamulets.com to keep my son lucky enough and to stay protected at tough situations.

^ Thank you.

Wow! Now I know why my daughter is second on the wait list for a single in her co-op rather than having a single room assigned. We forgot to pack a really special Amulet! (I’m surprised she didn’t think of this; she watches Charmed re-runs.)

We got a brochure in the mail from them (I think they must hit the households of most college students?) offering “value paks” of sheets, towels, egg-crate topper, etc. I’m on the fence:
–on one hand, $200 for the “Complete Campus Collection” seems to get your kid everything s/he will need (26 pieces, including sheets, towels, laundry basket, comforter, egg-crate pad, mattress pad, thermal blanket, “underbed storage solution” etc.) without dreaded trip to Bed, Bath and Beyond.
–on the other, wondering if stuff is cheesy (as in all poly sheets, flimsy towels, etc.)
Anyone heard of them??? They market themselves as “the only school endorsed extra-long bed linens guaranteed to fit”…

^When we got this brochure a few weeks ago, I did a search here at CC (I think I used 'Residence hall Linens - I might have even googled it) and got quite a few threads with negative comments. Things like the sheets pilled, didn’t last longer than a semester, the black sheets bled into my son’s t-shirt and shorts he slept in, etc. I decided against this package - it’s attempting, especially if you don’t like to shop or don’t have the time but one or two trips to BB&B or target should get you what you need for a lot less. BB&B is starting to put their college stuff out now and will have a big display after July 4th.

I found a “bed, not in a bag” offer from the Company Store (which always has great quality). You get a twin x-long comforter (either down or primaloft) and a 4-piece sheet set (either 300 thread count or jersey knit). My D is happy because she can get different colors for each item if she want to. It’s $124.99

I opted not to buy the dorm set advertised in the mail. 1) I like to see what I’m buying 2) I wanted everything washed BEFORE we got there. 3)I thought I could get it all cheaper at Wal Mart or Target or somewhere on sale…and I did.

They do make it look tempting though !

I bought the XL sheets and comforter from Target last week. Walmart is getting more in each week too. I didn’t buy the mail dorm sets for the same reason as above- I like to see things in person if possible and I wanted to wash the sheets at home at my leisure.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to make a dorm bed more firm? Last year for his freshman year I got a nice thick mattress topper and cushy mattress cover bc everyone said dorm beds were always rock hard and very uncomfortable. Now he says the surface was very comfy but the whole mattress sort of sank and there’s no real support for his back. As he is a dance major, I’d hate for him to develop back problems bc of his bed.

canamdance: you could always go to Home Depot and have them cut a sheet of plywood to the size of a twin mattress. Put an egg crate between the mattress & plywood so the mattress doesn’t “bottom out” on the board.

12rmh18: Yes, h and I came to a similar conclusion. We’re going to cobble together a sort of sectioned back board for the middle weight-bearing half of the bed with plywood, duct tape and hopefully this late in the summer we can find a camping weight pad to put over the creation. Home Depot to the rescue again!

I know this is an old question, but I ordered a folding bedboard a few months ago for a day bed that is similar to a college dorm bed. It covers the majority of the bed spring area, and although it isn’t as sturdy as plywood, it is definitely easier to deal with. For a really heavy person I don’t think it would be adequate, though. It’s pretty similar to the weight of peg board. I don’t remember where I ordered it from, but it was about $40 before shipping cost (seems like shipping was pretty steep, maybe $20.)
