LBW Wharton 2020!

can someone pm me with the details for the s2 gc?

Will it help if we call or email? At least have separate class and working group within LBW

@LightSailor oh shoot I didn’t read the email too carefully. If you are correct this really sucks. Too bad all of my other internships were either rejected or cancelled so I guess this is better than nothing.

I think we should start calling or emailing and ask for the following:

  1. For this online opportunity, have separate class just for accepted students in LBW
  2. The study/working groups should be formed among accepted students in LBW only
  3. Name the separate class to something like "LBW Virtual" so it won't look like a "Pay to Play" program and rising seniors can claim they actually participated in LBW 2020, not just a "Pay to Play" program like "Introduction to something..."
  4. Replicate LBW in person session as much as possible just like MTS&I Online and Moneyball Online.

Not sure how many of you (from the 160 accepted) are on this board, should be plenty even most haven’t posted anything yet. If you don’t want your previous efforts (to gain admission) to be wasted and if you do mind your program’s being downgraded to a “Pay to play”, please start email or calling Wharton Summer ASAP! When you call or email, make sure you ask to transfer to Mr. Eli Lesser, the director of Wharton Summer Programs, otherwise your message will be stuck at Summer Discovery, the third party used by Wharton to handle administration issues. Mr. Lessor is also on social networks like twitter too.

The email said they will formally announce the online opportunity on 24th. If enough voices are heard this week and early next week, we may be able to push them to make changes based on our feedback.

Don’t wait other people to do this for you. Please start taking action for yourself to get your voice out!

You boys out there may want to take a lead to create a petition too!

My sophomore son was rejected back in late Feb from LBW 2020 with more “qualified” candidates. Ok, no biggie as he had other options. Now they are sending an email today. since the in-person has been cancelled he is now an ideal candidate for this new offering ?

This is what you call revenue scrounging when many people pulled out and were not interested in an online program. Reach out to rejects to see if any of them
Would be interested. Got a chuckle out of it how COVID makes an applicant not good enough to exactly the type of student LBW wants??

@LightSailor do you have Mr. Eli Lesser contact information? Were you able to reach out to him?
I know LBW session 2 has instagram, you may mention it there so students there can take action as well.

I have asked my daughter to post the suggestion on instagram
Hope we can get enough people to email/call

session 2 has written an email to the program. 12 students have signed. They have sent this to session 1 instagram as well. They plan to send out email to Mr. Lesser tomorrow. So if you want to participant, take action and go sign your name.

@Sheepy123 I don’t have Mr. Eli Lesser’s direct contact information, I wrote a lengthy email based on the points/suggestions mentioned in my previous posts and asked to be forwarded to Mr. Lesser. No reply yet.

He does have a twitter account, so maybe someone can contact him that way to get his email.

Also it helps if somebody has family members who are current Penn students or alumni, please look up school directory for Mr. Lesser’s contact info so we can send petition email directly to him in addition to going through Summer Discovery.

This is UPenn’s online directory: https://directory.apps.upenn.edu/directory/jsp/fast.do, which is public. I think you can find Mr. Lesser’s email there by first name and last name search.

@texudocat Thanks. According to the directory, Mr. Lesser’s email is lesser@wharton.upenn.edu, his school phone number is also listed as part of public information.
I suggest everyone on this board as well as everyone on session 1&2 Instagram to send an email to Mr. Lesser to voice your opinion and frustration, even you’ve already done so through Summer Discovery. I’m just not sure how good Summer Discovery is in terms of passing our complaining emails to Mr. Lesser.

The email my daughter and several others drafted on instagram session 2 is pending others to sign. So far 20+ have signed. My daughter will send out this email to Mr. Lesser tonight.

@Jaggie99 Your son is an ideal applicant because he was interested in LBW, which demonstrates his interest in business and leadership, which is what the new course offering is about. It’s not that he’s qualified for LBW. calm down

Do you know the session 2 group instagram? I was accepted to session 2 and would also like to sign the petition if its not too late.

@SuperAngryTiger Sounds like it is too late to join the petition. In this case please email Mr. Lesser directly. You can either write your own or just list the suggestions mentioned in my previous posts with some modification. We need more people to voice their opinions today!

When you email, please send to both Lesser’s and Summer Discovery’s email addresses. I don’t know about the group chat, so I sent an individual email instead.

Here is the email I sent to Mr. Lesser.

" Dear Mr. Lesser,

Thank you so much for your email and the information about the upcoming online opportunity for the affected students in the Wharton Summer Programs.

After reading your email, I got the impression that the online opportunity will be a generic one offered to the admitted students in all programs other than those in MTS&I and Moneyball, which will be replicated online sessions.

LBW is known for its selectiveness when compared to other programs such as Introduction to Finance or Introduction to Entrepreneurship. I read the LBW acceptance rate is in low to mid-teens while the latter two programs admit most if not all of those who applied. I was also in GYLA Introduction to Entrepreneurship last summer.

I have the following suggestions I hope you will consider when deciding the details of the online program.

  1. For this online opportunity, have separate classes for accepted students into LBW (in-person session) only
  2. Form the study/working groups among accepted students in LBW only
  3. Name the separate class to something like "LBW Virtual" so it won't look like a "Pay to Play" program and rising seniors can claim they actually participated in LBW 2020
  4. Replicate LBW in-person session as much as possible, just like MTS&I Online and Moneyball Online.

LBW is of the two premium brands (MTS&I is the other one) among all Wharton Pre-college/Summer Programs. Students admitted into LBW are a group of very bright candidates, many of them will end up applying for Wharton or other colleges in Upenn.

My friends and I have worked very hard to gain admission to LBW, and we could not wait to attend (before the cancellation). I think it makes sense to maintain a similar kind of program differentiation in the online opportunity. Preserving the perceived prestige for LBW will no doubt help get more sign-ups from admitted students and will also be good reputation-wise for Wharton Summer.

Students on Session 1 & 2 LBW Instagram have already sent related petition emails either directly to you or via Summer Discovery. I’m not on Instagram, so I’m sending this individual email (we found your email in UPenn Public Directory) instead.

Thanks."

@All Sleepy123’s daughter and the 20+ students on session 2 Instagram have sent their petition while I and my friends have sent individual emails to Mr. Lesser. We did our part, but I don’t think it will be enough.

For the rest of you guys on this board or the people you know on GC who haven’t sent or signed anything, please join our efforts to voice your complains to Mr. Lesser via email or phone no later by tomorrow.

There should be 80 students in session 1 and 160 in session 2, if you want change as much as we do, please step up to do the same thing ASAP!

Can someone drop the session 2 instagram? Please and thank you

Is the Future in the Business World program the same program as LBW?

No, they’re two different programs. To my knowledge, a spot in the Future in the Business World program was offered to all students who applied to a Wharton Global Youth Summer Program - regardless of whether or not the student was accepted into their original program.
