McDonnell rode on the whole “Bob’s for Jobs” thing. I think he may have persuaded some naive NoVa Asian parents, etc. etc. Like I could see my mother voting for him. Gosh, is he an awful manipulator.

Some follow-up…sad…

The school board has now put this student into a position to be blamed and ostracized by her classmates. Nice going.

I am not at all surprised that the school board is putting this on the young women. Everyone knows that she is the reason that the prom was cancelled and they are using this as a warning “Don’t mess with us. We know best. Do not challenge us or everyone else will make your life hell.”

The school board is sick and they are power-hungry and authoritarian.

All those who voted for the cancelling of prom need to be REMOVED immediately and somehow compensate this young woman for her pain and suffering.

Posting with trepidation - this thread seems to be getting very political and just plain mean toward the employees of the the district…

On another idea: at my kid’s prom, each senior could buy a ticket for themselves and could, if desired, buy a ticket for a guest. All guests had to be identified to the school at least 4 days before the prom. You could invite a boyfriend or girlfriend from another school, buy a ticket for a date at your school, or just get a ticket for a friend. One of my D’s friends ended up breaking up with her BF and asking her sister (a year older and friends with lots of the seniors) to be her escort. Many kids went in big groups. There was no “oposite-sex-date-required” , just abide by the terms of the tickets. In this scenerio, same sex couples could just get tickets and arrive…

Sorry if you perceived my intention to be political. My purpose is to be action-oriented, organise, and get people moving. At my school I’ve been frequently dissatisfied with the bickering and infighting between student leaders. That’s politicking.

We all on here are clearly disgusted with the school officials’ actions, so let us help them show how America is disgusted with their actions. If there are school officials who are at heart supportive of McMillen but are afraid to voice their support because of Groupthink, we can empathise with them.

If it’s of any interest, this occurred not too long before the prom incident-

^^ How can anyone protest the innocence of the school officials after reading that article? Clearly this culture was perpetuated below the school board level. Superiors ascend from the rank of subordinates, usually echo the attitude of their own subordinates.

Dragonmom, as I wrote in an earlier post, at our school, anyone can go to prom, even alone. No dates or pair ups are required. I think that is how it should be.

^Except that in this instance it, once again, came down to the call of the principal and the school board. I’m not positive how you can fault others for that. But I did think it would be interesting as constance has been battling the school board for a while now.

Yes, but who reported the student? Principals tend to be busy people. They don’t randomly inspect classrooms for crossdressers.

^The principal was outside when he stepped out of the car.

Contacting those who really aren’t involved in the matter isn’t helpful. For those who actually want to get something done, there are a couple of Facebook groups devoted to funding a tolerant, private prom for the high school. I know I can’t post links, but it shouldn’t be difficult if you just search the name of the high school. They’re trying to find some people near the school to handle the logistics of it and they’ll be asking for donations soon. That’s something that’s relatively easy and tangible and helps the issue by sending a positive, not negative, message.

I don’t see those details in the article. Besides the teachers are complicit in not speaking out against the principal.

Aye. Working on all fronts will make it more attractive for the school board to back down. The goal right now is to make this event MUCH more attractive than whatever backwater prom bigoted parents want to hold.

story made BBC. Currently 1300+ hits on Google News. jackpot. The school officials literally won’t be able to sleep now.

for the others here: there are a dozen appropriate school officials to call. their home phone numbers are a few clicks away. call and do your part!

*I would caution against putting everybody from the “Deep South” into the same box. (Post #26)

**Bigotry, intolerance, bias know NO geographical boundaries. We all know Southerners who are very open-minded and tolerant, who are embarrassed by this and the stereotypical reputation this situation underscores. We also know people from northern states who are just the opposite. **We ALL have work to do!*

Exactly…and you can’t compare southern universities with southern K-12. Most southern colleges aren’t run by rural locals.

Yeah it’s more common in the deep south but I know plenty of bigots in the North. they just tend to be more closeted

On the bright side, when such bigotry gets wide spread attention through a media storm, I think it actually helps to lessen it going forward.

We all know the attitudes, discrimination, and hidden policies are out there: sometimes it’s extremely valuable to have them way out in the open.

For anyone interested, there are a number of FB groups one can join in support, with important information. Just search on Constance McMillen…

60% of the community there must be bigots, because in a local television station poll (WTVA.com), only 39% seemed to support Constance.

I am all for protesting this decision thru the proper channels. As I posted earlier, I sent an e-mail to the Board care of Superintendent Mc Neece’s address-at the District Headquarters. I am totally against posting home phone numbers on this or the face book forum- it is stooping to their level. She will change her phone number as soon as she starts getting hundreds of phone calls anyway so it won’t do any good. I also don’t believe in making her children suffer for the mistakes made by adults- that is doing the same thing to her family that is being done to Constance- again stooping to the Board’s level.
