Let's Share Household Organization Tips

Oh, noooo! Teri, that is the home maintenance event I dread the most. Not a fun way to spend a Sunday :frowning: Once, the hot water recirculation pipe burst in our garage. We were lucky that we were at home when it happened - the water bill was rather substantial. On the flip side, I tossed a lot of cr@p out of the garage that day!

DH and yD are traveling to see his relatives this week. As soon as they safely arrive at their destination, I will start a major war on junk! The recycling bin will be FULL this week. :)

BB - that’s often when I do my best work, too, when no one is at home to ‘keep an eye’ on stuff I’m hauling out, then magically, the garbage men show up and it’s all gone before anyone else realizes anything is gone.

Unfortunately, H doesn’t have a trip planned until early April.

Here is an article in the NYTimes this morning that fits the theme of this thread:

<a href=“Barbara Reich Organizes the Homes of New York’s Elite - The New York Times”>Barbara Reich Organizes the Homes of New York’s Elite - The New York Times;

that woman has OCD…I would not want someone rearranging my house if she was there on a play date. She reminds me of a woman I worked with that kept handing me her “Real Simple” magazine when she was done with it. I don’t want a sterile house - I like some clutter, it makes the place looked lived in. We have a box of Lego sitting the family room that gets touched every few months and that’s just fine with me.

Oh no teriwtt!!! Sorry about the furnace!

We spent the weekend boxing up and throwing out tons of stuff in the basement as we get ready to remodel. We cleaned out the art center and had an entire grocery bag full of colored markers, crayons, gel pens, cray pas regular pens and unopened boxes of pencils. We gave them to a teacher and she loved them! The hardest thing was getting rid of old artwork that the girls did.

The biggest item we are getting rid of is a home gym system. It was free to whoever wanted to move it! It leaves our house next Monday and will reside in Iowa!! Yay!

Interesting article from starbright!

Although I agree with a lot of it, throwing out toys after 24 hours seemed a bit much. To be honest, I was OK with some toy clutter (especially in the rooms) when the kids were little and having fun. Now that they are in college, we are moving it out as much as possible. Some toys/books are harder to give away due to sentimental attachement, but we’ll keep whittling it down as time goes on.

VHS TAPES
Ah, found 2 more VHS tapes to give away (Shrek and Toy Story). There is a grandma at church that has been taking many of my old VHS tapes. I hope she does not have these titles. If she does I can donate for the library sale. My goal is to get rid of all VHS tapes (except of course the kiddie footage) while there are still takers.

BELTS
I have a door rack on my closet door with soooo many belts. I don’t even wear belts and more. And most of them are too small anyway. Tomorrow I plan to do an attack on belts… anybody else want to do same at their house?

Ok, I attacked the belt rack as promised. I sent 20 belts to the give away bag. I still have 8 left in the larger size. Not sure they really fit, but was not ready yet for total purge.

The discarded belts actually did not take up much physical space. It was more of mind clutter (seeing them every day) and waste of hooks on the door rack that could serve a better purpose.

DH and I cleaned the garage yesterday (it was sunny and 65!) and we’ve been going through hundreds of CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes in the bonus room closet. DH, who has always been resistant to getting rid of things, has been ruthless this weekend. I think it may be due to the fact we’ve been watching “Hoarders” and he has been shocked by it.

My Elfa closet is getting installed tomorrow!
