Life at Middlesex

You realize A) Harvard and MIT are private colleges, B) if you go to boarding school in a certain state you are not considered an in-state student, and C) I’m pretty sure NH is colder than MA

Woah, woah. First of all, Exeter is 10 minutes farther from Boston than Andover. You won’t get any more used to the area at one school over the other. I’ve also never heard of a tuition discount for Harvard and MIT that applies to in-state students, can you provide a link to a website where this is stated? I’ve heard of this for state schools, but Harvard and MIT and not funded by the state.

Honestly, I think you should take a step back. Statistically speaking, you probably will not be admitted to Middlesex. Or Andover. Or Harvard or MIT or whatever other college you decide you want to go to.

And lastly, for now, do you want boarding school to increase your chances for name-brand schools? Newsflash: it probably won’t.

I’m sorry for being so harsh. Please don’t stroll around thinking that you will be lucky enough to get good news.

@needtoboard Well, I guess I am an idiot. I just like Massachusetts, I suppose.
@stargirl3 Of course I do not wish to attend a good school for a good college. I never really thought that mattered at all. I just wanted an upperhand from other students by receiving a better education in a close-knitted community. Why do you say I will not be accepted in to those schools? Because I misinterpreted some facts? I have a perfect GPA, high SAT and ACT scores, 99th percentile on all IOWA, MAP, STAAR, and TAKS tests I have taken, and and lots of academic achievements. Not everyone is the same online as they are in real life…

Do you know how many kids with perfect scores get rejected? Did you look at the applicant stats thread organized by @needtoboard? (Thank him! At least I think it’s a him. ) Middlesex has a 19% acceptance rate. That is an 81% chance that an applicant will not be admitted.

MIT? 91.1%.

Harvard? 94.1%.

I’m not saying you don’t have a chance. But don’t think that having perfect scores makes them want you. Heck, it might not even set you apart in a vast and talented applicant pool.

@stargirl3 The thing is, My scores are not what I was trusting to get me in. It is my other talents and achievements. My inventions have been on Engadget, amongst other notable sites, and was invited to be on the Ellen show as well. I do lots of stuff, and pride myself in it.

While those are certainly some amazing accomplishments of which you should be proud, they are no guarantee. So many people have done just as many incredible things.

As an aside–you’re not applying for financial aid, are you? Because that would lower your chances as well.

@stargirl3 Most likely not. I will get back to you when and if I get in.

@hackery21 Good luck! Hope to see you back on March 10. :)

Numbers aren’t everything, especially in boarding school admissions, and no hook guarantees an acceptance.

And @stargirl3 I’m a guy :P

Exception: Being the child of the president. Because what school would reject either of the Obamas? :p

Or being the president. Kid President?

I’ll be back, whether or not I get accepted. Even If I don’t, Greenhill still stands.

Have you been accepted to Greenhill yet?

Why do you feel like you have to prove something?!?! You came in, posted a cocky first post, backed it up with more cockiness, then defended yourself with cockiness. We were just giving you a reality check and letting you know that you are not entitled to an acceptance at Middlesex, which is a very difficult school to get into. We are trying to help you so when M10 2015 rolls around and you possibly don’t get that expected letter of acceptance from Middlesex that you don’t have a total meltdown.

No, But it has a higher acceptance rate and is no better than Pembroke. In fact, I would go as far as to say that it is not as good. It’s not a very hard school to get into if you have good grades.

You don’t understand! Applying for tenth grade is harder than ninth, schools are looking for fit and not just good grades, and do you think everyone with good grades gets into Middlesex? I’m sure there are plenty 4.0 GPA applicants with 99th percentile SSATs, but what if they already have someone with a profile just like yours?

@needtoboard Mate, I have said multiple times that I realize I may not get in, but I believe I can. I have also mentioned that if I do not get accepted, I will still be fine, and that there are other schools out there! I just asked for some info about life at Middlesex and received people telling me I won’t get in. THAT is why I mentioned my achievements, So you would not continue to mention the chance of me not getting in (Which does exist).

I’m going to be blunt and honest here. You sound like you have decent chances of getting into Middlesex. But so do the hundreds of other talented academics, artists, and athletes that apply for a slim number of spots. You do seem to be a picture-perfect applicant, but the school has lots and lots of those. You really need to begin to prepare yourself for reality- you don’t get everything you want just because you’re a patented inventor with a middle school 4.0 GPA. In fact, if all you do is science or inventing, you might want to rethink yourself even more. Schools like well-rounded kids who are smart, nice, and talented, mostly just all-around genuine people. I’m sorry if this came across as rude, but no one can chance you for a school that intense to get into. It’s really all in the cards, which are kept close to the AO’s hearts and sometimes not even revealed to them. And certainly the school doesn’t want any cocky or rude kids either. Honestly, I would try to keep your strong points and weaknesses on the down low and ask more general questions. Good luck.

This is how I would’ve started this thread, @hackery21:

Hi! I’m going to apply to Middlesex next year to start as a new sophomore. The website doesn’t give much information on student life, so can any future/current students fill me in? Thanks! :)

Ok, Can we PLEASE just avoid talking about me, and begin talking about the school? I really see something beautiful in the school and wish to know more about it. This is why I keep apologizing, so we can move on…

@stargirl3, That is why I apologized about starting off on the wrong foot.
