lol I didn’t see the house in the background and thought the boathouse in the middle of the lake WAS the house! $800k seems like a possible steal for a main close, a big yard, lake and boat house!
AL house prices are not like other higher priced areas (one can buy more for less, and lower taxes) - and many do finish careers elsewhere and find their money goes further with QOL. It is a great property. I will look to post a picture better of the house, but the house is in the central brown building in the picture background.
DH and I never ‘jumped in’ with some of our friends with these properties.
One also does not need to think ‘shot gun houses and dirt roads’ either when you think of AL.
We have lived in N AL since 1983, and we have a great QOL. However, our QOL involves being involved with our grandchildren and DDs - and the famiiy of 5 grandchildren live in TX – and it looks like we may be moving to TX in 2026. DH and I grew up in WI, went to college in Milwaukee, lived in two cities in TX for a time before moving to N AL.
Here is one of the interior pictures of this lake home. Opposite windows look over the water. 5 BR 4 BA 2699 sq ft. Built in 2006 (obviously renovated).
To comment about lake house in AL " The most expensive lake house in Alabama is located on Smith Lake and was recently sold for $4.345 million, making it the highest price ever paid for a property on the lake, according to AL.com. The 9,470-square-foot house at 351 County Road 2014 in Crane Hill was built in 2023 and includes seven bedrooms and seven and a half bathrooms. It features a saltwater pool with an infinity edge, a speakeasy bar, and a bunk room above the garage. The property also has a custom staircase, a double dock, and a putting green."
However I see there is a $7.9 Million Lake Martin Peninsula home in Alexander City AL.
It’s fun to think about different properties. I am trying to win H over on one right now. We haven’t even lived here a year, but I’m realizing the things I thought I could live with - I can’t- and they’re things that can’t be changed. I don’t think I’ll be moving to Alabama, but I wouldn’t mind moving to Ohio, where we first lived. Or Ann Arbor, or Chicago, or Minnesota…the list goes on.
I love and rent cabins and houses on lakes, almost all in the Northeast. I would not be happy if the lake was that color, appears full of algae. Can you boat, swim or fish safely in a lake that looks like that?
I found that house on Zillow. There are plenty of homes on that lake in the $1 mil + price range. Well over $400/per sq ft. And the his lake does indeed seem to be coveted.
This may “living the dream “ for them. That’s wonderful.
I think on really hot days the algae may be heavy. Heavy algae can happen even with rivers at peak heat. I am used to seeing lakes in TX and AL. In WI (where I grew up) often cold at peak heat. Have been at friend’s place on river in IL and boating and either water skiing or having the innertube behind. In the water is often behind the boat.
There is a lot of fishing on AL waterways, but I haven’t recreated on Smith Lake. Bass fishing tournaments and lots of fishing tournaments in AL.
“Lake Eufaula Alabama is also one of the lakes in Alabama with an incredible bass fishing reputation. Lake Eufaula is sometimes referred to as the Bass Fishing Capital of the World because you can target almost any bass species!”
Freshwater fishing - Guntersville AL area (NE AL).
There are many Instagram accounts dedicated to MCM homes for sale. I enjoy “midmodmichigan”x
Because it features houses in a state I’m familiar with. I would love to have one but it is not likely happening in this lifetime.
But I get a lot of satisfaction from looking!!
Not expected but there are hundreds just in the town of Midland, Michigan.
Just I case life in retirement is considering Michigan!
That may be Bruce Pearl’s home (Auburn Basketball Coach) - he has one on Lake Martin which is fairly close to Auburn. We were looking at retiring in Auburn and met with a realtor and a builder - somehow that cute adorable college town has become retirement haven and prices are now high. I can get more where I am in North Georgia and just drive down for entertainment - can’t get to all the baseball games or hardly any of the professional shows at the performing arts center (season tix sell out almost immediately) and students grab the rest. We’ll keep our eyes open but nothing less expensive or nicer than where we live right now. I’d like to live in Massachussets but $$$ for what you get doesn’t compare to what I have for same price in the south
I love mid-century modern! A few months ago I looked up my home in Dallas that parents bought in 1969 for $56k, over 3800 sf ranch with large yard, up on zillow for $1.2M!!! It has been updated, but not gutted and remodeled. I think mom sold it for $7XXk 15 or 20 years ago. That is a great style and I have transitioned a few rooms to that genre.
We were told during a Frank Lloyd Wright tour in Chicago to be wary of purchasing any of his homes. He was into beautiful (to him) design. He didn’t care if the dwelling leaked like a sieve (which several of them did) or had VERY extensive and expensive maintenance. At this point in my life, those are things I care about. Haha!
