My uncle/aunt have a place in Sea Ranch, and I agree it’s very beautiful! But I would say no, don’t go in a self-driving car on that twisty drive, at least for a few more generations of software development!!
That would be my guess. We drove back from the Laurentians yesterday afternoon/evening. Got in in time for dinner. I did not know that my new BMW had an assisted driving feature, which was very nice for the highway. Not nearly as good as the Full Self Drive on our Tesla, but you set the speed, keep your hands on the wheel and it sometimes lets you know there is something on the side it doesn’t like and you need to take the wheel, but it slows down for cars in front, is careful of things on the side, etc. It might the highway driving very relaxing. I had to disable a few features because we have a hitch-mounted bike rack.
I have been posting for some time about my nomadic existence. I actually don’t have a home base anymore. This summer I am in Cambridge MA on the common, very nice, but have been stressing about whether to settle (cannot find a place) or keep moving. Fortuitously a friend just offered to rent me a 3 bedroom place in Portland ME , for the fall, with water view and bay windows. Woohoo. I am again committed to this lifestyle. I have a winter rental lined up in Rockport MA. All of these are furnished. I am not sure anymore if moving around means freedom or postponement. Sometimes I enjoy it, and sometimes I feel like I am kicking the can down the road. I am 75. Maybe I get as much variety for my Gemini nature as I can before entering an “independent living” community.
I think you have found a nice way to have a variety of homes in retirement. It’s fun to read about your nomadic existence ![]()
Yesterday I looked at a “little house” in Essex MA among farms and woods, formerly, I heard, a town jail. The bottom is brick and the top floor is white clapboard. Inside one room on each level, with oak floors, cream linen curtains, big windows, colonial (original) latches and doors, so cute and magical. I am reserving it for May since I am not doing it now.
I cannot afford to buy in the coastal area I am from but doing these seasonal rentals I am living in million dollar homes. I am getting older so time will run out but for now…fun! I am trusting clarity will come and I will find a more lasting home in the next couple of years. A lot of it depends on kids.
I love hearing about your temporary “nests”! May I ask, are you able to pack most of your personal belongings into a car or do you need something larger (or help) for your frequent moves.
The cottage sounds so quaint!
I travel light and the places I go have most everything I need. I bring clothes and meds, toiletries. However my Monstera has double in size and I am attached to it so we’ll see….I do have a small storage space with photo albums etc. When I sold my house I stored some furniture but that didn’t last long- doesn’t make sense.
My mother had a storage space at the same place, I have one, and one of my kids has one. The owner gives me discounts as a “family member” (his mom was in a facility with mine). My other daughter jokes that she is breaking the generational cycle and will not get a storage space in this facility.
I know someone who moved a big monstera via Uber!! ![]()
Some people have grandchildren. I have my monstera. Uber is a good idea!![]()
What is this?
And that is a small monstera. I have a couple and one of them is I’m guessing 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide!
MIne doubled in size this summer. The cutouts in HImom’s photo show that it is an older plant (with newer leaves). Mine is huge but so far only 1-2 cutouts in some leaves. It’s a teenager.
Oh…it’s a plant? Is that right?
This is my outside one. They don’t call them Monsters for nothing.
This one is in about 3 gallon pot somewhere under that mass of foliage. Mostly air roots.
It’s a type of Philodendron.
We have a tree philodendron that came with the house and it keeps wanting to send roots into the garage. I looked up the difference between this and the Monstero plant, which is aka Swiss Cheese Plant because the leaves develop natural holes.
We have this BIG plant in our living room. Honestly, I don’t like it, but my husband just loves these house plants.
Not the same kind of plant…but something I would never move around with me!
I told my kids right from when they were young that I expected grandkids, and that I would be happy to quit work and help babysit them. Which I did! And luckily, they were accommodating and able to have kids. And then DS and DD and their spouses decided that they wanted all of us to live closer together so the cousins could grow up near each other and near us. After lots of research, we all picked up and moved from various parts of Texas to the same semi-rural area of Massachusetts, and we are happily enjoying lots of family time.
I doubt if my telling them that I wanted grandkids had anything to do with the actual outcomes…
@anxiousmom I’m glad that worked out for you and your family.
But I stand by my original statement of not saying anything to anyone about having children. I won’t bother to list the many reasons.
I have one of those in a back window, getting larger, but slowly. Actually I like the multi colors.
