<p>I suggest that parents of sons consider discussing having them acquire and keep a (clean) waste basket, (clean) hand towels and (clean) soap at the bathroom sink for female visitors. Air freshener might also be on that list for discussion and acquisition.</p>
<p>PS–Yes, I would like grandchildren someday.</p>

<p>I’m moving into my first apartment (well, second if you count the one I lived in while abroad, but that was only for a month) and so far, here’s what I’m bringing:</p>
<p>Bedroom: comforter, sheets, pillows, throw pillows, bed side lamp, clock, wall clock, framed photos, desk, school supplies, office accessories, desk chair, ottoman/end of bed thing, hangers, closet storage, brand spankin new early birthday present LCD TV, wall calendar</p>
<p>Bathroom: shower curtain, liner, rod, rings, towels, rug, toothbrush holder, soap dispenser, tumbler, some kind of storage for under sink TBD</p>
<p>Kitchen: flatware, dishware, cups/glasses (all covered by roommate), chef’s knife, cutting board, wine glasses, hand mixer, fry pan, cookie sheets (me), random tools (other roommates) but I’m the one who loves cooking!</p>
<p>Family room: lamps, old TV and TV stand, will definitely need decorative stuff</p>
<p>Outdoors: (we have a patio) patio table, chairs, and umbrella, Weber kettle, candles, welcome mat, planters (hate bare entrances!), tools (hammer, screw driver, duct tape, haha)</p>
<p>I’m sure we’ll need a bunch more, but it’ll be fun to shop together! Looking forward to it.</p>
<p>Kristin - congrats on your first apartment! Just a minor comment - your wall clock might be better in the family room or in the bathroom. If it ticks, it will drive you crazy at night, and you have your bedside clock in your bedroom. I always have a wall clock in the bathroom - the one place I’m apt to be without a watch!</p>
<p>Just an FYI agreed with another poster…go to the Dollar Tree (I personally think that is the best of the Dollar Stores). You can get almost everything you need there for a fraction of the cost…they have the can openers, dishes, mugs, placemats (if you want them), shower curtain hooks and curtains (nothing fancy…but they have liners), etc…and for $1 each you can’t go wrong. The stuff we got our kid has lasted for four years and we still have it just in case it’s needed again. Personally, I’d take the shopping list there FIRST…then head off to the more expensive retailers.</p>
<p>Am I the only Mom of a student who has expressed absolutely no interest in outfitting his apartment. I think he would happily go off to school with his bedding. (same stuff as last year) towels and a few garbage bags of clothes and his computer and his art supplies.
I have mentioned to him the place only comes with the furniture and nothing in the kitchen. I also mentioned he might want to make a list of needed items to divide up with the other two roommates.No reason to end up with 3 microwaves and 3 toasters. Roommates who he does not know. Roommates that he has not made an effort to contact. Granted they have not contacted him. My husband makes fun of me when the Walmart commercial about the mom getting the dorm room all together. My husband will be bringing my son up and said that he is not going to make son’s bed. Freshman year I helped move him in and I did make the bed and have him unpack everything. Last year my H dropped son off by carrying in the stuff and my son was so busy with friends that my H ended up just driving back home. My H’s feeling is that if my son figures out he needs something he is a big boy and will find his way to a store.
I did pick up some flatware at Ross yesterday. My son’s problem also is he is constantly putting off what could get done today till tomorrow. This is a daily pattern. Before you know it he will be needing to leave and we will have to rush to get anything done.

<p>I just asked Son3 if he has given any thought to what he wants to take to his apartment at school (it’s a “dorm”, but his apartment has a full kitchen, living room, he has his own room, and he shares a private bath with one guy). The answer was a disinterested “No.” Ditto to the question about whether we need to buy new clothes, shoes, etc.</p>
<p>Mild arrgh. This is, after all, Son3. I’m getting used to it, and he’ll undoubtedly survive.</p>
<p>Guys leave for Europe in a week in a half, and get back ONE DAY before he’s supposed to move into his dorm. Tick, tick, tick.</p>
<p>Oh well.</p>
<p>mom2three-my son also needs new shoes. His shoes have holes in the bottom. He is in no rush.</p>
<p>S is home now for 2 wks. I took the day off tomorrow so we can hit the dollar store and Target and try to get the odds and ends that he needs/wants. It should be interesting to see what he comes up with. He is very excited about getting his first off campus apartment and has his own ideas about what is important to have in it.</p>
