Little Bunny Foo Foo: pet or meat?

@acollegestudent, I was thinking of you when the topic turned to guinea pigs. :)

I have free range chickens, and the amount of personality they can develop would be very surprising to many. I often say to people, “If you locked a human child in a closet for five years, how intelligent and personable do you think they would be?” Therefore I am willing to believe you about the potential of guinea pigs.

I was served rabbit at a home in France as an adolescent, and didn’t like it at all. Not a fan of “dark meat.” Pheasant, on the other hand, is dark but doesn’t have that unappealing gristly crunch.

Ostrich meat tasted more like beef! Surprisingly good.

Apes really are our cousins, and anyone who has studied them or read a lot about primate research would see them as different from other mammals.
Plus, they can carry diseases that are also dangerous to humans, like Ebola. (Hope this doesn’t derail this thread)

My dad was a hunter when younger (grew up on a farm during the depression: squirrels, rabbits, hogs etc shot by the family was the main source of meat some times. For him as a kid, knowing you could take your .22 out in the woods and put meat on the table for your family was huge.) During various hunting seasons he shot and we ate deer, pheasant, quail, chuckar, elk, hog, whatever but now that I think about it I’m not sure I’ve ever had rabbit. Have had squirrel. Like quail, lots of little bones.

Carmela (my avatar) assures me that guinea pigs taste terrible! [-X

Just don’t take Carmela to visit her cousins in Peru. Evidently they taste better there.

:-O

Are you related to Anya? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nT3MBYp5I-Y</a>

Bunnies aren’t just cute like everybody supposes,
They’ve got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses.
And what’s with all the carrots-?
What do they need such good eyesight for anywa - y?
Bunnies, bunnies it must be bunnies!

Back in the eighties when I was a brand new Customs inspector, I was going through the luggage of a passenger who had just arrived from South America - maybe Bolivia, Ecuador or Peru, can’t recall. Anyhow, when I asked him if he was bringing in any food items, he pulled out a big plastic bag wrapped in newspaper. I asked the guy what it was but couldn’t understand his reply so I unwrapped it. It contained a skinned guinea pig - it looked like a fetus! I was never so grossed out in my life. He said that it was quite the delicacy. Too bad for him that the agriculture inspector confiscated it. [-X

If anyone is looking for something to cook for dinner, our neighborhood is overrun with rabbits.

That Carmela is looking mighty plump!

BtVS is one of my all time fave shows! That’s probably where our joke started.
Although it’s funny how many kid shows have evil bunnies though. Have you seen Hoodwinked! and not to mention those terrifying giant bunnies in Teletubbies. :D

…And if you can’t make it to jym’s place, rabbit season is open in BB’s backyard! There is a fat one nibbling on grass in the middle of the lawn as we speak!

If anybody is interested in chipmunks, they’ve been eating our tomatoes on the vine. So they’re already stuffed.

Time for our neighborhood to get another coyote. Will take care of rabbits and chipmunks (hopefully not cats and dogs).

There is a chinese restaurant next to a veterinarians office nearby. That always makes me nervous.

Anyone interested in weird cuisine should watch Parts Unknown! Great show. And some vegetarian dishes can be pretty gross looking, too. Natto, anyone?

@BB, I’ll try natto over balut, any day…

Consolation, our last Thanksgiving dinner was a rabbit and pheasant with witloof cornucopia. You might want to give Bugs Bunny another chance. You might have been marked for life by a poor cook in France. One issue with rabbit meat is that the quality of the meat is critical and knowing a good source is important.

I’ve tried balut but just couldn’t do it. I love duck, crispy style from our local Chinese place. But seeing that wee little duck fetus was just disturbing. I could dissect the balut but there was no way I was eating it. I had pet rabbits as a kid, not sure if I would want to eat it but it doesn’t bother me at all that others make that choice. Same for dog, horse, guinea pig, not my thing but I can’t see why it’s morally less justified than other animals.

Jym & BB,

I take it neither of you happen to be fans of Cadbury chocolate eggs considering their source. :D

If they can sing, might I recommend calling a record label executive to sign them up…and watch them get royally ripped off. Especially when they don’t sell enough CDs/records/downloads to cover that record label advance. :D

Considering how much you’ve demonstrated some sentimentality towards lobsters a.k.a. “cockroaches of the sea”…I wonder why.

Also, I see you fully buy into stereotypes, too. :(

At least it’s not next to a morgue. @-)
