You have already gone back after the first visit by the husband. I would not have even done that. Was the office and bathroom adequately sanitized, including door knob on the outside, lightswitches and faucets after he left? This is unbelievable behavior.
I don’t know your financial situation but working at home would be a given, I would think, and if the tax season is extended, maybe you can find work or go out on your own. I would not continue in this situation given your husband’s age and health.
If you feel YOU were potentially exposed, you also have to think about how to protect your husband. Not suggesting you rent an airbnb but honestly, separate from him in the house if you can, don’t share dishes, and sanitize like crazy. We are stripping and showering when we come back from being in a store right now.
“It’s been the law for years that anyone who wants one can get a 6 month extension just by asking. I’m not sure what the filing date law would help, maybe a tax accountant could fill me in. Would it do anything except relieve the need to ask?”
It would allow accounting and tax offices to shut down. We’re at full throttle right now. My boss is doing all he can to assist us in working from home. However, not all my work can be done remotely, so I have to go in to the office every day or two, if only for a short time. A coworker who would otherwise be able to work 100% from home has been unable to get his VPN working, even with hours of tech/IT assistance, so he has to go in.
Even though folks get extra time to pay - or they can file for an extension - they still have to file something. If we could get the IRS to cut some slack on all tax filings, we too could quarantine.
After my Dad’s stroke last year, I filed for an extension for him. I still had to estimate his taxes and pay them. If I was off by more than a certain percentage, I would have had to pay a penalty.
I thought that the distinction when you filed an extension is that you needed to pay estimated taxes by the original filing date of April 15.
Maybe pushing back the filing date will mean that you no longer will have to pay estimated taxes?
I’m not getting the payment details on this aid package. Since the tax code changed, we no longer get any or much of a tax return. If we get money this April, does that mean we will have to owe $2400 extra next April. I’m sorry, I’m confused about this.
I am so sorry. It is hugely inconsiderate of them both. You also have a husband who is of an age where he needs to be very careful. If possible, I would do as much social distancing as you can at home to protect him if you have been exposed. I was working at my job and am now working from home the past few days. I switched to home after people were coughing around me. I felt so very uncomfortable and nervous about it. We have a rule that no one should come to work if coughing because of Covid 19 but the boss was one coughing and the woman in the room next to mine. Person across the hall has spouse working in ER with patients coming in with symptoms. Other boss has son who is in quarantine for being exposed to the virus and this second boss was going all around everywhere. I got way too stressed. I hope you are able to work at home. I would be insulted by the type of behavior from your boss and her husband. They either don’t value you or don’t think they can really get you sick. Either way, not nice behavior.
Yes, in our house, whenever anyone goes out I; public, they strip and shower 1st thing upon returning home. Have LOTS of clorax wipes and similar plus sanitizer, alcohol and coal & water.
My brother, bless his heart, is warning us that there may be shelter in place SOON. I replied we’ve been sheltering in place for weeks now, except brief outings for essential grocery shopping, funeral meetings & funeral. He is busy entertaining his friends who flew in from Japan for funeral. I hope he stays healthy—I have no extra bandwidth to take care of him.
Your brother seems like he is in denial with regard to risk. Isn’t this the same guy who insisted that your Dad’s funeral be huge and spectacular right in the middle of a major pandemic??
Yep, my brother who has been abusive of my respiratory therapists who told him his breathing tests were very bad and who swore at the lung doc who told him he has bad sleep apnea, as indicated in sleep study. He has refused to do anything any one has ever suggested so we just keep our distance—literally and figuratively. He’s unhappy about being so lonely but he makes lots of terrible choices.
He is very oblivious about a lot of things and chooses friends who are all takers. It’s sad but he’s an adult and keeps making awful choices.
Yes, I would be livid. I’m stressed out myself, having flown home yesterday. My husband is at risk since he’s 66 and doesn’t have a spleen. We are following our doctor’s instructions. I hope it’s enough.
What is it with these “boss” type people? Do they want to have a staff at the end of all this or not?!
If people are largely doing computer work those in charge need to DO SOME WORK to figure out how to get those workers out of harms way - and productive at home.
One of the accountants on here can correct me if I am wrong, but I think the payment date got extended to July 15. You just have to file your return (or an extension) by April 15. As of a couple days ago my accountant told me that my state had not extended the payment deadline yet, but he assumed they would follow the feds as they usually do.
I just told him to file extensions for me and that we would deal with it this summer.
The tax filing deadline has been extended from April 15 to July 15 as a result of the pandemic. No penalties will be assessed. If I were the OP I’d take a leave and/or work from home.
Not official yet. IRS and Treasury have not acknowledged. Has not gone through official channels. New reporting this because of Mnuchin’s tweet.
Yes, anyone can file Form 4868 for an automatic extension until October 15. But it’s not automatic in that one has to fileBathe form . Tax offices and accountants are charging up to $100 to file the form, from what I’ve seen. Also, though tax bills have an automatic July 15 extension. , estimated tax payments do not at this time. How all this plays out is yet to be known.
Though it’s largely the well to do and infirmed (from my company client base) that are the ones who owe the taxes, those who are not in that category and find themselves inadvertently owing money might find themselves in a quandary as to what to do. Libraries are closed so printing off an extension is not so easy and it’s even uncertain for tax pros as to what the government is going do about what is owed with an Extension form.
Reading this made me furious about how they acted and how little concern they have for others, especially since they know of your husband’s health issues. As someone living with a serious illness I just can’t comprehend the selfishness of a coworker who would knowingly expose you and your husband to something that could shorten his life.
It isn’t worth risking the health of your husband by continuing to go to work. And in fact at this point you need to consider yourself already potentially exposed since the virus can be spread by people not showing any symptoms (either because it’s early on, or because they have a mild case). I urge you to take precautions at home in case you unfortunately do have it.
I would not be encouraging anyone to quit their job on the spot in what is very likely about to become a depression economy. Yes, it is an infuriating situation, but OP can make a legitimate claim that, as she has become exposed to the virus, she now must quarantine for two weeks (as can her coworker who was also exposed). As the tax deadline has been extended, work in her office is about to quiet down some.
While the OP is off of work, she might take a moment to shoot an email to her boss’s boss and HR in regards to that woman’s serious lapse of judgement.
I think the boss is the owner and the visitor is her spouse. I don’t think there’s an HR or a boss’s boss.
OP, I would email your office manager to create a paper trail (describing what you did in your initial post). I’d also notify the health department and self-quarantine for 2 weeks. You may want to also pass on this OSHA standard to your boss with the suggestion that she forward it to her legal team.
I’d be looking for a boss that allows folks to work at home safely and doesn’t unnecessarily expose workers to dangers. This one sounds like one who doesn’t.
