^^ Yeah, he loves to leave those little details out… so the $300 meal with the good bottle of wine could be the lobster dinner, could be another overpriced luxury that he claims he can’t afford, and it could have all been paid for by someone else. Lets all be reminded that lobster is in the cockroach family. So that $126 lobster was like eating a GIANT COCKROACH. Mmmmm… yummy…

Eeewww, no, not the same family as cockroaches. Both are members of the phylum Arthropoda, but insects and crustaceans diverge at that point.

^still too close for comfort!

[The Associated Press: George the lobster gets new lease on life at 140](http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hmOrslWmPZJOTmOOWSP4do0VHBwwD95JUPLO0)

at least George the lobster is safe

Do you have to ruin it for everybody?:p

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA…

In Maine, I could easily pick up lobster for like 6.99 / ib. Some of the steak cuts were more expensive.

Lobster doesn’t even taste that good anyway. :{ Well I like lobster salad, and maybe it makes good stock to go with soups and congee. But it’s a waste of money to eat lobster by itself.

You can ruin a lobster if you don’t cook it right. I must admit I’ve never met a lobster I did not like. :D

Well I’ve eaten many lobsters, both at home and outside.

Admittedly, I haven’t eaten anything lobster other than lobster salad for years, but the idea of a 126-dollar lobster dinner astounds me. :S A lobster dinner should be 30 dollars max for a family of four.

Well okay then you need to break out the garlic, spices and other cooking costs but yeah.

I don’t think lobster should be eaten by itself … that’s just a waste of flavour. Eat it with some jasmine rice and egg/potato salad maybe?

At $126 a pop, dislike grows exponentially. :D

^^^^ You referring to the lobster or the poster, violadad ? ;)

I am in a family of three and we spend about $1000 per month on groceries. :S I think just my mom and I spend about $700 per month. We don’t even eat meat, and we never go out to eat. Organic food is expensive, especially organic frozen food. lol Everyone in my family hates cooking so we do buy a lot of prepared (but healthy) foods and snacks. If there were a Whole Foods around here, groceries would be cheaper, but there isn’t. We have to buy a lot of stuff from the local health food store.

Well, Dad II…we know how concerned you are about your finances, and conserving to send your son and daughter to college. I sure hope this largesse was as the guest of your company CEO.

Back to the original topic this relates to…$126 would buy this family of two grownups groceries for over two weeks. Dinner OUT here means going to a friends for a pot luck…and I don’t mean lobster and filet mignon. Or it might mean lunch at a place like Panera with a gift card. We have two kids in college. Spending $126 on ONE entree would not be a happening. But then…different famiies have different priorities, I guess.

Do they give gourmand scholarships? ;)

Have you ever shopped at a Whole Foods Market? We have visited…it’s MIGHTY expensive.

You mean “Whole Paycheck”?

Gah, the organic food movement.

Pesticide-residue-free, fine. Environmental sustainability fine.

But paranoia against perfectly good genetic enhancement and non-local food?

Cuz the small amount of gas you save so outweighs the resource use incurred by growing food on “local” soil. Sometimes I wonder if the people who keep shouting local food at me have heard of Adam Smith.

lobster salad.

I tried it. But I don’t want mayo with my lobster. And what is with those hot dog roll buns??? I need to ship you people some Amoroso’s. [Amoroso’s Baking Company – We make the rolls that make Philly’s sandwiches world famous.](http://amorosobaking.com/)

I’m not a foodie, by any stretch, but I have had some of the worst bread (in my limited travels). Virginia, blech. Boston, blech. Columbus, Oh… I don’t even know what that stuff was.

NYC, now they can make a bagel

Ehh? Lobster salad is good by itself.

Until today I didn’t realise lobster was so expensive outside of Maine… haha, I guess there’s one benefit to my home state that I had taken for granted! (Still never living there again though.)

The BEST lobster rolls (that lobster in a roll that looks like a hot dog bun) do NOT have mayo in them. JUST chunks of sweet delicious lobster…in a tasty bun.

But these can easily cost $10-$12 each. Sorry…that’s also not in my “grocery” budget.

We just don’t eat out much. It’s too expensive. Plus, we like to cook and have friends over. Much less costly and a lot more fun (we think). Since most of our friends also have one or two kids in college, we’re all in the same budgetary boat. We’ve had a lot of fun trying new recipes, and inexpensive or homemade wines. We don’t have any need to go out to dinner and spend $300 on one meal…not at all.

But then…we sort of have gotten to like “Porchville” for vacation too. A lot less expensive and much more convenient than a trip far from home.

In the past I was less likely to pass on an item due to cost. I am now paying attention to prices and sales. Now if we want steak I go to Costco versus buying it at the market. I do tend to try to cook healthy or at least not use prepared foods or boxed mixes. I have never made Hamburger Helper. If we have soup it is usually homemade. Aside from frozen pizza we don’t eat much frozen food. I only buy cereal on sale or at Tradr Joe’s.
The other night I made chicken chili. I used chicken breasts that were hormone-antibiotic free. In the past I might have bought Shelton or Rosie chicken but now I usually buy the Gelson’s store label. My husband who is cheap is picky about his chicken. I find my family does not care for cheap chicken. I used fresh red peppers, onions, cilantro and spices, cheddar cheese. I think it probably cost me close to 20 dollars to make. It feed 3 of us for two nights. D3 does not like chicken chili so opened a can of hormel.
We eat out at least 1 night a week. Not super expensive but not fast food. Usually mexican, chinese or indian. I usually go out to lunch 2 times a week.
We used to take vacations. The last few years our vacation usually involved visiting family. Though I guess I need to count ski trips at vacations. Husband and two kids just back from 3 nights in Mammoth, Lift tickets for 3 for 3 days 550 dollars, bargain condo for 160 a night- ski in and ski out but booked at the last minute so saved 30 percent. I shopped for them at home and they cooked in the condo. Husband had to buy new boots this year. D3 bought new equipment last year.
We are lucky.
