Lonesome Dove - August CC Book Club Selection

I can’t decide! I think the Round House is a great selection. BTW, I haven’t read the prequel and had no trouble with Roundhouse. I’d love to read Woolf’s To The Lighthouse. I read Mrs. Dalloway a few years ago and have been promising myself I’d follow up with Lighthouse. Murakami would be a change of pace, and I’d like to try more.

What I have on my nightstand (on a family visit away from home now) is Life Drawing by Robin Black; The Sea, the Sea by Iris Murdoch; and A Jane Austen Education by William Deresiewicz. But what I will actually read could change as quickly as a trip to the local library and used book store :)

^ PlantMom, would you be okay with The Round House as the October selection even though you’ve already read it?

I’ve already read The Round House, too, but wouldn’t mind re-reading - the discussion here is always so good it would be great to get the insights here. I guess that The Round House and the Sherlock Holmes duo are my top two. I will probably read To the Lighthouse, Mr. Mercedes, and All the Light…on my own. Not sure if I would pick up the Murakami on my own, or the Americans book. (Sorry, I can’t see the list as I’m typing my response.)

Amazon shows David Mitchell’s as not coming out on Kindle until September 2, if that matters to anyone. I don’t think this is a spoiler but…I was excited at the beginning of the reviews but it sounds like it is structurally similar to Cloud Atlas, so I lost some enthusiasm.

I’d be happy to read The Round House and to have a group in which to discuss it. It’s a great choice!

I voted this time because I let ignatius have my “Get Out of Jail Free Card” a/k/a “You guys pick and I’ll join in” (post #263). Not lettin’ that happen again! Voting is hard. There are too many good choices.

Since Tiredofsnow and PlantMom are both willing to re-read, let’s go with The Round House.

I already know that NJTheatreMOM will re-read, as she has scouted selections for us in the past (the Deets of the group  ).

My theory behind the October selection is that this was probably the last time The Round House would be suggested as an option. In our history, contemporary novels generally get mentioned once or twice and then fall away forever. The classics, however, we shall always have with us. I’ve never read To the Lighthouse – maybe something to consider for December?

I’ll start a new thread for The Round House. Thanks for a really great discussion of Lonesome Dove! We can continue to use this thread to report on our interim reading or any other info that we want to share. That will help minimize my book club withdrawal symptoms. :)

Exceptionally honored to be compared to Deets! :">

As always, thanks to Mary13 and all who posted. I enjoyed the book and the discussion.

Yes, thank you Mary13 for leading another wonderful book discussion and thank you to the whole group for sharing your thoughts. I’m so glad I read this book!

Looking forward to reading The Round House!

My husband and I are at the beach for an extra long weekend and he is reading…Lonesome Dove!

Yes, a big thank-you to Mary for organizing us and everyone for the great discussion. That book had been on my shelves for years, I’m glad I finally got pushed to read it.

Joining the chorus of thank your to Mary13-( and, others) I think Lonesome Dove will be memorable and one of top book selections, certainly one I wound not have read.

Thanks from me, too, Mary!! Although I read Lonesome Dove years (decades) ago, it was great to revisit such a well-told story. Simple. Great characters. Humor through the sadness. And such an iconic American story, too. I think sometimes we forget what a history we have as we read books from other parts of the world that seem so exotic and more important, somehow.

Lonesome Dove was indeed a great selection, and it yielded a fine discussion. I had been curious about the book for years but never would have read it if not for this group.

I agree with all of the above. Lonesome Dove was not a book I expected to like, but I liked it!

Many thanks, everyone! I had a great time, as always. I started the new thread and look forward to discussing The Round House with you in October.

Anyone looking for another really good Western, read True Grit by Charles Portis. Yeah, you may have seen the movie, but don’t miss the book. I highly recommend it. Here’s an article by Donna Tartt extolling True Grit:

^ I second the recommendation. I’ve read True Grit; it’s a great book.

^^^ And it takes almost no time to read and enjoy.

Hello everyone! Here I am, 2 weeks late, to say I FINALLY finished “Lonesome Dove!” I had to take break part way through to read another book, “The Art of Hearing Heaertbeats,” for my Books on the Beach group. Add in weekend travels, house guests, etc, and the result is it took me longer than expected.

ANYWAY, I really enjoyed the book. I don’t have time now to read through all the posts here and add my comments, but I will. I will just say, though, that I can’t believe Gus died!

As for “The Round House” – thank goodness I’ve already read it! Books on the Beach only goes through Labor Day, but they meet every 2 weeks. And my hometown Book Club starts up again in September with “The Goldfinch,” so I’ve got my work cut out …

Looking forward to your comments, CBBBlinker. Your Books on the Beach club makes me picture a group of women sitting close together in the sun by the sea for days on end, reading, and reading, and reading.
