<p>Journalism and Communication majors at the University of Georgia will be studying in the Grady School, home to the Peabody Awards for electronic media. The Odum School of Ecology is the first stand-alone academic school in the world devoted to ecology and home to the River Basin Center. The university supports undergraduate research through the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) which funds summer fellowships. The First-Year Odyssey Seminar program ensures freshman the opportunity to interact with faculty and students in small classes. Students interested in government can gain experience through the Vinson Institute Program semester internship. And this is just the tip of the iceberg of the opportunities at the University of Georgia.</p>
<p>Drew University in New Jersey offers an extensive honors program through its Baldwin Honors Program. Science students have the opportunity to do research under the supervision of retired industrial scientists in the Research Institute for Scientists Emeriti. Drew also supports undergraduate research in the sciences through its Drew Summer Science Institute. Economic students have the opportunity to attend Wall Street presentations and discussions two days a week. The University also participates in the New York Semester program. The political science department sponsors a Semester on the United Nations, Semester on the New Europe, the London Semester, and the Wall Street Semester.</p>
<p>The honors program at Clarkson University in New York offers in-coming freshman the opportunity for Pre-Frosh summer research. All undergraduates all eligible to work on team projects in real world setting through its Student Projects for Engineering Experience and Design Program. Business students gain hands-on experience through the Shipley Center for Innovation. Freshman business students launch their own business in their first two semesters. The Arete program is double major integrating professional training in business with the liberal arts. All students are required to complete a professional experience before they graduate.</p>
<p>Virginia Tech undergraduates have multiple opportunities for undergraduate research including the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute Undergraduate Scholars Program, summer research at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, and the Macromolecules and Interface Institute. The College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences maintains a list of research opportunities in its Undergraduate Research Institute. Students can intern at the Virginia Water Resources Research Center or work with faculty as part of the Intelligence Community Center for Academic Excellence. Virginia Tech offers a variety of opportunities to study abroad including at its own Center for European Studies and Architecture in Switzerland. The new Center for the Arts will include The Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology where students and faculty can research and develop learning modules.</p>
<p>Belmont University in Tennessee offers a music business program as part of its College of Entertainment & Music Business. Students have access to recording studio facilities as well as extensive opportunities for internships. The Social Entrepreneurship major allows students to choose from five different concentrations. Other majors include Corporate Communication, Web Programing and Developments, and Applied Discrete Mathematics. Belmont has exchange programs as part of its Study Abroad program including with institutions in Australia, Hong Kong, Italy, and Germany. Students in the Engaged Scholars Program complete a series of experiences include study abroad, service learning, internships, and student leadership.</p>
<p>Students at Albion College in Michigan can board their horses at the Equestrian Center or participate on an equestrian team. Public policy students have access to internships and travel opportunities at the Ford Institute for Leadership in Public Policy and Service. Pre-med students will benefit from the college’s Institute for Premedical Professions and Health Sciences. Majors in Environmental Studies, Earth Sciences, Sustainability Studies, and Environmental Sciences have hands-on opportunities at the Whitehouse Nature Center and the Center for Sustainability and the Environment. All students have opportunities to complete research and projects through the Foundation for Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity.</p>
<p>Auburn University in Alabama has a Detection and Food Safety Center that provides students problem-solving projects in engineering, biochemistry, and food sciences. The Information Assurance Laboratory is certified by the National Security Agency and offers a variety of scholarship opportunities. The Women’s Leadership Institute offers a Women and Leadership Course as well as a learning community. Community and Civic Engagement Fellows are available to undergraduates to work on civic engagement projects. Auburn offers a variety of opportunities for undergraduate research including Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program, College of Sciences & Mathematics Undergraduate Competitive Research Fellowships, Agricultural Undergraduate Research Fellowships, and Cellular and Molecular Bioscience Undergraduate Summer Research Scholars Program. Like most major research institutions, Auburn has far more opportunities available to students then can be commented on here.</p>
<p>Marine Biology students at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania can participate in semester programs at the Duke University Marine Lab and the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory. The college has a variety of college-sponsored international programs including Allegheny in Cologne, the Center for Sustainable Development in Costa Rica, and Environmental Studies in Israel. The Center for Political Participation provides internships opportunities to students on campus. The Center for Economic Environmental Development provides students with hands-on experience through sponsored projects and internships. Students also can earn an accelerated Masters Degree in cooperation with the Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Public Policy and Management.</p>
<p>Baldwin-Wallace College’s Music Conservatory in Ohio is associated with the Riemenschneider Bach Institute. Conservatory students have a variety of opportunities including a Jazz Emphasis program and an Arts Management Program. The Arts Management Program is open to all students, requires two internships, and culminates in a senior capstone experience. The college has founded an Institute for Sustainable Business Practice and with an undergraduate major and an MBA option. As part of the A2B transfer program, students can start at area community colleges and complete their last two years at Baldwin-Wallace with degrees in Health Care Management, Management, and Organizational Leadership. The Undergraduate Research and Creative Studies Summer Scholars Program is a 10 week program and participants are awarded $3,500.</p>
<p>Students at Appalachian State University in North Carolina will find it easy to participate in some form of study abroad program through any number of short-term, faculty led programs. The Brantley Risk Insurance Center provides students with travel opportunities to conferences and shadow opportunities including in London. Students can develop and promote their own products in the BootstrAPPs, a student run retail store. There is also a Mentoring Program for Entrepreneur Scholars. The Watauga Global Community is a program where all students meet general education requirements in team taught classes and have a common residential community. Students interested the beer brewing and wine industry help manage the Ivory Tower Brewery</p>
<p>Arizona State University offers BA and BS degrees as part of its School of Sustainability. Students in the College of Engineering gain hands-on lab experience through the Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative. The Cronkite News Service provides journalism students with intensive professional experience on campus and in Washington DC. The Barrett Honors College has its own endowment. Students majoring in Global Health can participate in programs sponsored by the Center for Global Health. The School of Computing, Informatics, & Decision Systems Engineering offers accelerated 4+1 degrees in Computer Science, Computer System Engineering, and Industrial Engineering. The College of Business provides a Residential Community for freshman and a weekend retreat. The School of Human Evolution and Social Change offers an undergraduate research symposium as well as a research apprenticeship program and undergraduate research assistantship.</p>
<p>The School of Business at La Salle University in Pennsylvania has established corporate partnerships that allows for co-teaching with executives from Johnson & Johnson. The School of Business also sponsors a Business Scholars Co-op Program. Students from any major can join the Entrepreneurs Network and access resources from the Center for Entrepreneurship. The Integrated Science, Business, and Technology programs also provides internship and co-op opportunities to students. Community Service Scholars are awarded half-tuition scholarships. Students in the Communication department gain experience at the University owned and operated cable TV station.</p>
<p>Business students at Boston University can complete semester internships in five countries and Washington D.C. The New England Center for Investigative Reporting provides journalism students with opportunities to work on investigative journalism projects. Communication students can intern in Los Angeles, Washington DC, or London. Engineering students can complete study abroad in the second semester of their sophomore year in Germany, Israel, or France. The Engineering College offers the Engineering/Medical Integrated Curriculum (ENGMEDIC) designed for biomedical engineering students interested in becoming physicians. Presidential/Engineering Scholars receive a half-tuition scholarship as well as funding for up to 10 hours of research per week for one semester. The MMEDIC program allows students to take modular courses that allow them to simultaneously fulfill undergraduate requirements and some requirements for the first and second year of med school. The College of Arts and Sciences has a variety of joint BA/MA programs including a Liberal Arts and Master of Public Health Program.</p>
<p>Wofford College in South Carolina offers The Road Less Traveled scholarship to study abroad in areas not frequently chosen by students. The college also participates in the Capitol Hill Internship Program, Washington Semester Program, and the Bard Globalization and International Affairs Program. The Interim semester (January Term) encourages independent study projects and provides travel grants. The Mungo Center for Professional Excellence sponsors the Boston Terrier Consulting Group which allows students gain experience solving real-world business problems. Student can also participate in the BRICS Initiative which is a nine-month program that provides a crash course in the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russian, India, China, and South Africa).</p>
<p>Creighton University in Nebraska offers an undergraduate Health Administration & Policy program and students work on projects in the Center for Health Services Research and Patient Safety. Students in the College of Business participate in the Career Portfolio Program that is a four-year career development program. The college also sponsors the Anna Tyler Waite Leadership Program and a Bioscience Entrepreneurship Program. The Ratio Studiorum Program for freshman and sophomores focuses on students planning their curriculum, career, and way of life. The university provides a variety of leadership programs including the Cortina community and Freshman Leadership Program. The University is home to the Center for Henry James Studies and is developing curriculum in sustainable energy. Media students gain hands on experience in the student run StudioBlue design studio.</p>
<p>Florida State University has established Pathways of Excellence around interdisciplinary topics to guide its development and growth. Clusters include Neuroscience; Growth, Processing and Characterization of Advanced Materials; and History of Text Technologies. First and second-year students have the opportunity to work with faculty as research assistants through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program. The Office of Undergraduate Research has developed the FSU Global Scholars Program to increase the number of students who intern, volunteer, or conduct research in the developing world. Students can join a variety of learning communities including Music, Women in Math, Science, and Engineering, Social Justice, and Nursing. Business students have the opportunity to study abroad in Germany, France, South Korea, Turkey, and Italy. Engineering students can work on projects funded by the Center for Intelligent Systems, Control, and Robotics. FSU offers combines Bachelor’s/Master Degree programs in a variety of areas including computer science, history, statistics, communication, mechanical engineering, nursing, and public health.</p>
<p>DeSales University in Pennsylvania offers combined bachelor/master degrees in Accounting, Criminal Justice, and Physician Assistant. Business students benefit from the The Fleming Institute for Business Ethics which hosts an Ethics Bowl Competition. Computer Science majors can select from a Game Programming Track, Digital Art Track, Information Science Track, or Theoretical Track. DeSales Honors program is by invitation only and is focused on faith and reason. The Salesian Leadership Institute provides a two-year leadership program for students. All freshman participate in the Character U program which includes various activities and peer mentoring. DeSales has transfer agreements with eleven community colleges in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Students may also cross register with five other colleges members of the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges.</p>
<p>Valparaiso University in Indiana offers business students the opportunity to work on business strategy with executives from the Whirlpool Corporation. Students also have the option to major in a nine-semester program Enhanced International Business in German that includes a year of study and work in Germany. International Business student can spend a semester abroad in England, Germany, China, Mexico, France, or Japan. Engineering students have similar opportunities to study abroad. The College of Engineering offers a Humanitarian Engineering minor which complements ongoing projects such as Engineers without Borders. Engineering students can also participate in research at the Markiewicz Solar Energy Research Center which students helped to design and build. Valparaiso is also home to the Bach Institute which sponsors a Bach Choir. Students can also take advantage of the Student Exchange Program of the Associated New American Colleges and study a semester at another college in the United States.</p>
<p>I want to give a quick plug to Drew Univ. As Sadilly mentioned it has a lot of good programs and had great aid in the past.
I feel, (and this President is stepping down) that as far as rankings go, Drew dropped from 50’s to lower when Pres Weisbach refused to have anything to do with the rankings, not filling out paperwork, giving interviews on his opinion of it (not flattering) It will be interesting to see what the new President will do.
I wouldn’t judge on rankings for a lot of colleges, but Drew is definitely a hidden gem.</p>
<p>The University of San Francisco offers a Great Books program through the Saint Ignatius Institute which replaces the core curriculum. The Honors Program in the Humanities also substitutes for the core curriculum. The Erasmus Community brings together students to participate in community-based research projects. The School of Management offers the Freshman Launch to help freshman acclimate to college life and work on a team project. Students can participate in Arrupe Justice Immersion programs that focus on people living on the margins of society. The McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good has a McCarthy Fellows summer program in Sacramento that allows sophomores and above to intern in legislative and executive offices. Students can attend a variety of intellectual programs sponsored by the Davies Forum.</p>
<p>Christopher Newport University in Virginia has established a Presidents Leadership Program that provides students with unique opportunities for community service, internships, learning community, and study abroad. The university makes it easy to participate in study abroad with a number of university sponsored short term programs. Students can find a variety of hands-on opportunities at The Center for Community Engagement. The Center for American Studies offers Junior Fellowships and the chance to research American or National Security Studies. Students can participate in conservation projects as part of The Center for Wetland Conservation. Undergraduates can work as research assistants or fellows at the Wason Center for Public Policy. The university also has a large number of learning communities based on a wide range of academic subjects.</p>
<p>Canisius College in New York provides funding and pairs students with faculty for on or off-campus experiences that produces a tangible product for presentation. Canisius has early assurance of admissions for both dental and medical school. Students in the Fashion Institute of Technology spend a year in New York City at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Communication students gain hands-on experience producing video projects for the Video Institute. Fitzpatrick Leadership Fellows develop and implement their own public affairs program through the Fitzpatrick Institute of Public Affairs and Leadership. The Institute for the Study of Human-Animal Relations also has student fellows and provides internships opportunities.</p>
<p>Students at Earlham College in Indiana operate the Earlham College Equestrian Program which offers lessons and boards horses. Earlham also sponsors the Border Studies Program which allows students to spend a semester in Tucson studying border issues. Students at Earlham can participate in the well-established Japanese Studies Program. The program includes study abroad and attracts Japanese students to study at Earlham. Earlham sponsors a Project Pericles as well as Bonner, McNair, and Davis United World Scholars. First year students can spend a semester in concentrate programs in Education, Environmental Studies, French or Spanish Language, or Natural Science where students live in a learning community, participate in community activities, and register for common classes related to the theme. The Joseph Moore Museum offers provides students internship opportunities related to Natural History.</p>
<p>Clemson University in South Carolina offers students a variety of living-learning communities including ROTC, Professional Golf Management, and transfer students. Students can major in Turfgrass; Agricultural Mechanization and Business; International Engineering and Science; Food Science; and Photonic Science and Technology. There are plenty of opportunities to study abroad including with faculty led programs or at the Clemson campus in Brussels, Belgium. The Creative Inquiry program lets teams of undergraduates take on investigations led by a professor for periods of two to four semesters. Freshman in the Calhoun Honors College can participate in research projects during the summer through the EUREKA! Program. Clemson lists on campus internships available through its various centers and institutes including Biodiesel Production, Smartbuilding Advantage, and campus administrative offices. Business students can join the I LEAD! or the Horizons Professional Development programs.</p>

The Center for Engineering Design & Entrepreneurship provides students with real world engineering projects. Students can study abroad at Gonzaga-in-Florence which includes an engineering option. The Comprehensive Leadership Program is a four-year, interdisciplinary undergraduate leadership opportunity. Other leadership development programs include the Student-Athlete Leadership Institute, the Hogan Entrepreneurial Leadership Program, and Experimental Leadership Institute. The Institute for Hate Studies has sponsored courses such as Hate Studies in Business and Why People Hate: Interdisciplinary Perspectives.</p>

<p>Bryant University in Rhode Island is known for its business program. Over three-quarters of its graduates are in Business related majors. First year students can take Business 101 which challenges students to create their own business. The Sophomore International Experience is a special winter/summer session abroad where students earn academic credits and learn how businesses operate globally. Even though most students are business majors, the Center for Program Innovation emphasizes experiential learning across disciplines. All students participate in the Liberal Arts Seminar and read the same material centered around a common theme. Starting with the class of 2016, students will participate in a First-Year Gateway that will focus on improving student’s writing, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and ethical reasoning. The US-China Institute provides internship and immersion opportunities for students in China.</p>
<p>California State University-Chico has its own university farm that includes irrigation training facilities, greenhouses, animals units, and an organic vegetables project. The College of Business emphasizes applied learning through the Student Tracking, Evaluation, and Portfolio System Project. Students can work on projects that focus on technology and communication in the Center for Information Systems Research. The Gateway Science Museum provides a variety of student opportunities for hands on experience. Students from all backgrounds can participate in the Institute for Sustainable Development activities and research. Students regularly assist faculty in the search and recovery of human remains in the Chico Human Identification Laboratory which serves Northern California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Students can receive credit for participating in a forum at The Center for Applied and Professional Ethics. The Center also sponsors an Ethics Bowl. Students in Construction Management organized and managed the building of the visitors barn and have assisted in rebuilding Joplin, Missouri.</p>
<p>Kalamazoo College in Michigan is known for its K-Plan that integrates the Liberal Arts, Learning Experience, International Engagement, and a Senior Individualized Project. The Shared Passages Seminars span a student’s academic career from freshman to senior year. First and second year students participate in a Discovery Externship Program. As part of the Great Lakes Colleges Association, students can participate in programs in Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Japan, and Africa. The Guilds of Kalamazoo establish relationships between students, alumni, and faculty around common professional interests which currently include Business, Health, Justice & Peace, Sustainability, and Law. Civic Engagement Scholars are paid student leaders that work with the Institute for Service-Learning on various projects. The Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership offers summer internships.</p>
<p>Clark University in Massachusetts offers an accelerated BA/Master in 14 areas where the fifth year is tuition free. Students can cross register with other colleges in the Worcester Consortium which also sponsors an Undergraduate Shakespeare Conference. The Starssler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies provides students with the opportunity for undergraduate research as well as summer internships. The Masakowski and Marsh Institutes have a summer internship program at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Clark offers over a dozen programs for funding undergraduate research. Geography and Environmental Science majors benefit from the extensive GIS capabilities of the Clark Labs.</p>
<p>Students at Hendrix College in Arkansas complete a personal odyssey that is based on experiential learning in the liberal arts. The odyssey is based on artistic creativity, global awareness, professional and leadership development, service to the world, undergraduate research, and special projects. The Hendrix-Murphy Foundation offers students internships in Literature and Language. Students can acquire credit for their Odyssey at the Miller Center for Vocation, Ethics, and Calling. Internships are also available through the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. Students benefit from a variety of visiting faculty through the Drake Endowed Lectureship. Students can complete at combined BA/MPH in Public Health with the UAMS College of Public Health as a 4+1 program.</p>
<p>Texas Tech University’s Center for Undergraduate Research connects students to research opportunities through the various colleges and on-campus programs. One program is the Summer Accelerated Biomedical Research Internship that pays students for working in labs while exposing them to graduate student life. Other programs include the Research and Technology Scholars, Clark Scholars, and Undergraduate Research Fellow Program. The Wind Science and Engineering Research Center used student designed equipment to monitor wind storms. Students in the College the Business can participate in faculty lead study abroad programs in Prague, Norway, Spain, Europe, Peru. Texas Tech offers a Graduate on Time guarantee. The Texas Wine Marketing Research Institute allows students to develop expertise in wine marketing and economic development research. The Center for Pulsed Power and Power Electronics employs undergraduate assistants. Students with active Chess ratings can qualify up to a full scholarship. All freshman are required to live on campus and can participate in a variety of learning communities and freshman interest groups.</p>
<p>The Oregon State University Wave Research Laboratory offers undergraduates a 10-week summer research program sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Students can intern with the Oregon Wine Research Institute which offers one of only five Bachelor Degrees in viticulture and enology in the nation. The Austin Entrepreneurship Program allows students from all departments to live at the Weatherford Residential College while offering courses and hands-on experiences in entrepreneurship. Over 70 classes are held in The Radiation Center and 40% of these classes use the reactor. Students can major in Renewable Materials, Apparel Design, Food Science and Technology, Forest Management, New Media Communication, Radiation Health Physics, and Housing Studies.</p>
<p>The University of Dallas, a small Liberal Arts College, has only been around for less than 60 years but has 36 students named Fulbright scholars and is the youngest university in the 20th century to be granted a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. The University’s core curriculum is based on the Classics/Great Books and all students take the same core classes. Sophomores spend a semester at the University’s Rome campus taking core classes at a converted suburban villa. The semester includes several off campus trips including one to Greece. Business majors also participate in the Rome semester. The college of business offers a concentration in business for non-business majors. Students can create their own personal plan of study through the Paideia Major.</p>
<p>Students at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in New York can join a Reader’s College where they meet with other students and faculty to discuss great reading. Students serve as Environmental Ambassadors at the Finger Lakes Institute which can include internships, independent study, or a paid summer sciences research fellowship. The Student Summer Research Program sponsors a variety of research opportunities with faculty in the sciences and social sciences. Students can apply for funded fellowships to complete projects through the Centennial Center for Leadership. The Leadership Institute is a two-and-a-half day conference for emerging and experienced student leaders. The Fisher Center for the Study of Woman and Men offers Woodworth Student Summer Fellowships to pursue academic projects over the summer.</p>
