Good luck to your son! I live in close proximity to all three of Maine’s LACs and Colby has a wonderful campus with very nice athletic facilities including an Olympic-sized pool. My D toured and that stood out for her. My boys have played baseball on their turf fields which are also excellent. I don’t think Waterville is THAT remote considering it’s only 30 minutes to Augusta and 45 minutes away from Bowdoin, which does have a lively downtown that some people prefer over Waterville. For Maine, it’s not remote anyway. I suppose it’s all relative. You should visit all three of Maine’s LACs and go to Portland if you can while you’re here. I will say, March is not the best time to visit Maine so please keep that in mind. None of the trees or grass will be green yet and we sometimes have Nor’easters (blizzards) in March. BUT, spring skiing is awesome if you’re into it!
Thanks for the info! Would you say Colby has the nicest athletic facilities? We will be returning in late July for vacation in Acadia so maybe we will tour the campuses again then for a summer view:)

Note that Trinity resided for 55 years on its original “College Hill” campus before moving to its current location.
Its not even close, Colby’s Athletic center is nicer than many lower D-1 schools.
Acadia is beautiful. Yes, if you can fit in I would. And you can easily jump off the highway on the way to Bar Harbor if you take 95N before heading east.
I knew someone would point to Trinity which once occupied a few buildings in downtown Hartford. I give it props for occupying its present site for over 150 years:
