Looking for ideas for daughter's 18th b-day gift

my Ds taste run to trendy as well, and they mix their pearls with other necklaces- making it their own

but them having that necklace for a special event is nice

I had a long strand and made two hnecklaces out of it

I guess there is just something really grown up about pearls or a gold chain or diamond studs

We are not big jewelry people, but some classics will indeed last forever!!!

what about a nice pair of boots…they are very in right now and if you get a classic style will last a long time

Our town has incredible jewelry all artist designed and singular pieces and very trendy. I have bought D too much jewelry to actually admit there. I would look for a store like that.

Non jewelry: I go back to the leather messenger back I described earlier. It has a dedicated place for a lap top. I bought it as a present for my son, but I know D is eyeing it, too. Sprayed, it becomes water proof and good for walking or cycling.

Non-jewelry ideas – depends on what kind of person she is. You could buy something from Coach (check outlets) if she lights up over handbags. A really good coat is something many young women don’t have and a classic style in a quality fabric is good for years. A music box or globe can mean a lot

But I’d go for something simple and classic in jewelry because even if she’s not ‘into’ jewelry now…ten years from now she may think differently. It used to break my heart when I worked in retail jewelry to have some young girl bring back something that her father/grandfather/whoever bought her because ‘I like silver, not gold’ or ‘this stone is too big’ when I know when they’re 30 or 40, they’ll be kicking themselves. Not because they’re going to be all about big rocks and shiny things but because they will realize the sentimental value of saying ‘yes, my father gave this to me when I turned 18’.

To keep an eye on costs, try the following:

www.ice.com
www.ross-simons.com (having a sale right now)
www.shopnbc.com (yes, it’s a shopping channel but they’ve got good quality and beautiful trendy things.)

Another possibility is a nice set of luggage. Always needed by college kids-on-the-go.

Oooh. I’m liking the luggage idea. Very practical and will last a while, hopefully. Will also check the Tiffany’s web site as well as the others. Thanks Katliamom and Novelisto. I appreciate the help from all of you. I have six more weeks to figure it all out.

Along luggage line, why not a gym or weekend bag from l l bean? Putting initials on and ordering their favorite colors would be nice.

The Today show just ran a piece on gifts for new moms…called push presents, anyway, one suggestion that caught my ear was a watch engraved with the date and time of the child’s birth…which I think would also be a neat 18th birthday gift for the child themselves… everyone knows the date they were born, but not all remember the actual time…

Another suggestion in terms of trendy jewelry…are the Pandora charm bracelets…the bracelet is like a silver twisted wire… kind of thick and you buy charms that are almost like lifesavers in shape… they come in different colors and enamels and have silver and gold accents… you can google Pandora charms and you will see their links… that way, everyone could get her a charm? They are very popular here in New England…

Another gift idea is a Kate Spade makeup bag? or a Kate Spade wallet? She will probably have it for a long time…

how about a simple 18K gold bangle…for 18 yrs?
