If you have any questions about UNT, Im happy to answer…my son is a freshman in Jazz Studies and LOVES it. They have a really great percussion professor in Quincy Davis!
Thank you very much!
How has he found it to get in the gen eds with the music studies at UNT? It seems like a great program, but seemed to have more gen ed requirements than some music schools, but that may be my misunderstanding…
can you speak to how many undergrad/grad students are in the percussion program? thanks!!
When my kid was there, the studio was about 20-25 students - grad, undergrad and Music Ed. That being said, my kid was the only undergrad performance major his year (the other one dropped out). Typically there were 4-5 grad students (MM and PhD).
According to percussion kid, Temple is changing their acceptance policy (pretty sure it’s for performance majors) to accept a lot fewer and give them full rides. Probably trying to compete with Curtis.
Thanks for this info! That is interesting- while a full ride is wonderful, smaller admission numbers is nerve wracking!!
U Mass Lowell apparently has a great music program with percussion so maybe consider that as well. Our friends applying to New England conservatory and Berklee have also been applying to UMass Lowell.
Sorry! I was actually traveling to UNT this weekend. SO…his gen ed’s thankfully have been what he says is “SUPER easy”…his music classes are a good level of challenging for him so he is relieved. I think it seems more gen ed’s than he is actually taking…the jazz programs have a few they sub for gen eds and a few are waived for guitar so I assume the same for percussion? He takes about 2 per semester. There are ZERO complaints about courses and that was a big concern for him. He even turned down offers at other schools with far less academics bc he loved it there so much. There are 35 guitar players in the jazz program so I assume the same for percussion but a good question to ask admissions. Is he drum set? They have an amazing drum professor that even my guitarist has clicked with. Sorry for the delay
