How far along are your kids in the process? My s has seen 0 colleges. He didn’t want to see colleges during spring break. He is currently reading a poker magazine rather than studying for the two AP tests and 3 SAT II tests he is taking in two weeks. He has a college list his GC made for him and has looked through the Fisk Guide maybe once. How we could possibly get from here to an ED application, I don’t know.

Heidi, we started early with a few initial visits last summer, a few more during the fall, and a college visit tour during spring break. This is mainly because daughter is/was interested in schools in every part of the country and early on announced that she will not apply anywhre unless she has visited first. To meet the last requirement, we had to plan carefully to fit everything in. Most of her friends are only looking at in-state schools or at schools in adjoining states and are only now doing college visits.

Starting as early as we did may not be such a good thing. At this point daughter is sick of looking at colleges, has told me “no more visits” and is ready to just get it over with. Unfortunately, that doesn’t leave much room for change in direction if she changes her mind over the next six months. :)

My H took my S on a quickie tour of a few colleges during our fall
2 day break. Due to S’s music & sports schedules, I don’t know when we will squeeze in other visits except possibly during the summer. My S
isn’t really interested in the college process that much even though his
girlfriend and many friends are seniors. I “ordered” him to put together a preliminary list of schools over our recent spring break. At least we have this to use for a jumping off point and to discuss with the guidance counselor. Of course, many things can change over the next
six months to make this list worthless.

Add my daughter to the list.

Done!

heidi ~ we’ve visited 6 OOS colleges (last summer) and two in-state. We still plan to visit about six more in a driving marathon this August. We’ve spent a long time bringing a not-too-interested S up to speed: now he is very intereested in finding the “right” college. After June, all tests will be completed. No essays yet, and no ideas for essays yet…but I am an optimist and hope S will draft some in late August and then set them aside for later editing. This has been a good procedure for him in the past.

One of my s’s friends saw Davidson over spring break, didn’t like it, and my s promptly crossed it off his list. Perhaps “virtual tours” like this will do the trick for us.

reasonabledad, your s is going to start writing essays this summer? Ummm… wow! I think that’s a great idea, though can’t see it happening here.

reasonabledad and carolyn and threeboysnjmom, what schools have your kids visited so far? Were they overly affected by tour guides and beautiful buildings? Do you all think your s or d may need an overnight to get a real feel for a college? I watched a couple college videos I ordered and confess to being greatly affected by the tour guides.

Add my D too!

My family is kind of in a tight spot financially, so it looks like its going to take a lot for me to visit my out-of-state colleges.

my parents are in a pinch after sending my sis to penn… grrr… now if i could just get in…

Well my pinch is my mom said we might lose our house…so it’s a much bigger pinch as you can see
