Here we go again!! We visited 7 schools in 6 days over Spring Break.D2 is our physics, astrophysics geek, who also wants to run and play music. Starting in Portland, Or, we visited UO (closed for break, but good tour, wake up call for D2), Lewis and Clark (also closed, D2 more engaged, thought she could do this), Reed (found students wound too tight for her taste), U Puget Sound (open, went to classes, spent time in the dorm, #1 on her list) UW (too BIG, no academic advising, dorms with 1000+kids freaked her) Western Wa. (in spite of terrible tour D2 will apply, closed for break, the student guide pointed in the direction of “this is where math classes are, this is where the biology lab is”…dorms were closed completely, Bellingham very nice, will go back to visit when classes are in session) U British Columbia (excellent tour, integrated science program huge plus, most diverse student body, most beautiful campus, definitely #2 on the list. Now will plan East Coast tour with H. Wants to see Rochester, Boston College, Hopkins, Haverford. D2 Also up to her ears working on 5 AP tests, track season, concert season. This is a cruel joke. She’s exhausted.

Adding my D. In the last 2 years we have visited 10 colleges, had music lessons at 5 of them and she plans to audition at 4 of the 5. We are back to the search though for at least one more school to take a lesson and then audition for next winter. I would like for her to find 2 more, but time is short now and don’t know if we will be able to fit in more than 1 lesson and visit before auditions.

smsmom, If you don’t mind answering, can you tell me how you went about arranging lessons for your child and where? My D wants to double major in chem and vocal performance and is now looking at places that offer good programs in both.

pnyer ~ In a way it was funny…at UCSD the guide was really reaching out to the kids trying to make a virtue of the fact that it is hard to graduate in four years becasue of class scheduling (not all classes are offerred every year due to budget cuts, or something). So he starts telling the crowd how great it is to spend 5-6 years getting a bachelors degree, how much less stress and more fun you have on campus, and how the ocean is always there…like a vacation that never ends! He seemd unaware that the parents (mostly asian in my tour group) gave a very poor reception to this idea. As I said, it was sort of amusing in retrospect. Of course, as the 'investor" in this venture, I was not amused at the time. The kids detested getting four years of education in six.
At UCLA a very charming young woman told us how hard it was to get into UCLA (seeming to think this was a benefit) but assured us at length that once enrolled, UCLA was SO MUCH EASIER than high school, we just wouldn’t believe it! Wrong message for my two: they believed it.
It just illustrates that my kids are very effected by what they hear and see, and perhaps less effected by what they read about colleges.

Wow, we have a nice, large group. And, I’m sure some other parents will be joining us when “full panic” hits in the fall. :)

Crabbylady, If you get a moment, could you either post a trip report with more details of U of Puget Sound or PM me? We’re thinking about maybe visiting there at some point. Daughter just told me that she is thinking about dropping Lewis & Clark from her list but wants to keep at least one, probably two, schools in the PNW on her working list.

By the way, just wanted to add a scary fact that my daughter announced last week: there are less than 400 days until her high school graduation. :)

Please, the stress from the end of junior year is bad enough!

reasonabledad, as a dad myself I too am frustrated that kids seem to believe everything they hear from their peers (even the obviously uninformed ones) and ignore what we have to say. I am certain that UCLA’s curriculum is no cake walk. No idea what the student had in mind. But I am troubled to hear about UCSD students graduating in 5 to 6 years. Have you heard that from other people too (perhaps UCSD students)? My D is a junior in HS and wants to go pre-med and will be applying to UCLA and UCSD among others. (Did’nt mean to hijack the thread)
