Even after all these years, I still learn something new about long-time members. ![]()
@Bromfield2’s story about Marshall Fields made me think of visiting the Pittsburgh Kauffman’s downtown with my great grandmother. We’d ride the train, shop for silly things that weren’t needed, and finish the trip with a chocolate soda in their coffee shop. D and I went to L&T last December- loved the windows. Sad to think of the store closing. We still like the Tyson’s store - I’m one of those people who still likes to feel the fabric, examine the seams, try things on.
Clearly, after my time. Going into Philadelphia to shop with my grandmother and/or mother was late '50s/early’60s. Once the Cherry Hill Mall opened, that was my go to with friends in my teens. Strawbridges, Bambergers. Also, Moorestown Mall with Wanamaker’s and Gimbels.
I remember the jenkintown store well.
They closed the L&T in the nearby mall, then opened in a downtown area. That is not convenient for me.
I cannot remember the last time I went to a department store. I’ve been to a mall recently, but that was for a movie and a visit to the Apple Store.
@skieurope, It’s not as interesting as you hoped. We had both an official City Hall wedding and an unofficial quasi-religious wedding, unofficial because the person my husband wanted as an officiant had no legal authority for same.
@twinsmama Thanks for clearing that up; I thought you meant you had been married to someone before your current husband. That’s what happens when you assume. L-)
I have a strange story to tell. BTW I love the dresses from Lord & Taylor.
It appears Walmart is selling Lord & Taylor clothes extra 30% off. I subscribe to offers.com and got an email with this offer. How weird is that. 10/9 to 10/24 while supplies last.
Old news; it was announced in May.

Yes…from the CEO who is with LT…
They have partnered with Walmart to sell “higher end” clothes with Walmart. I believe online only.
I just want to go on the record…If they sold them in a Walmart store…I would not be ther trying them on.
The customer service at Lord and Taylor was excellent in my opinion. I seriously doubt Wally World can match that.
Betting that is where all the “good stuff” from the 5th Avenue store went!!
I like Lord & Taylor because it is peaceful to shop there. (unlike the madhouse Macy’s) They have great quality clothes and wonderful customer service. It never looks like a junkyard at our local mall. They have the nicest dresses and coats. I have even gotten good deals on shoes and boots.
I can remember shopping at our suburban L&T as a young girl. Occasionally I’d go with my mother to the 2nd floor when she had to shop for a special dress or gown. I remember being in awe of the elegance of the dress section and the fawning sales ladies. Also, every year, on the day after Thanksgiving, we’d get dressed up and go visit Santa Claus. As we all know, the “real” Santa Claus was at L&T. The others were just his helpers.
The “real” Santa Claus was, and is, at Macy’s Herald Square. ![]()
I always look forward to their $20 off $40 purchase coupons ( including cosmetics) Usually given out just before mother’s day and on Black Friday.
Totally agree about that Macy’s Santa.
Back in the day…LT actually started the Christmas window decor…not related to what they sold. Others quickly followed.
Wondering how those windows will be in the future…I hear they are doing scaled back decorations this year.
Anyway…it’s the end of something I sort of thought would never end…the closing of the main flagship while keeping all those mall stores open? Not what I expected.
@alwaysamom When I mentioned earlier that as a kid, I recall going with my mom to Lord and Taylor in Philly to get dressy clothes, I meant on City Line Avenue…I didn’t mean in Center City. I also remember we went to Bonwit Teller around there too.
For regular shopping, yep, going to the Cherry Hill Mall was the thing, particularly with friends
I briefly worked at the Lord and Taylor that used to be in Ann Arbor. Wish I had known about the NYC store, but I usually only have enough energy for one store, Macy’s Herald Square. Nordstrom’s is coming off my list, as they are discontinuing their plus sized department. Dillards is my favorite department store. My kids have only gone into a department store to pick out suits for their groomsmen. It makes me sad.
A bit off topic but still related to cloth shopping…D1 told me she now has a membership to Rent the Runway for $170/month. She can have 4 dresses out at a time, but can rent as often as she wants. Aside from renting dresses for special occasions, she also rents dresses for work/everyday wear. She said many prints go out of style so fast that it was more economical to rent. Maybe this will be a new trend.
@oldfort Article about that in NYT
@skieurope I once saw the real Santa Claus, and it happened to be in a florist shop in suburban Pennsylvania. You never know where he will turn up.
