Loud music in gyms

I will look into whether there are spin bikes on the floor. I was wondering how this would work on a regular bike.

@sushiritto, yes, what this man was flipping was not an actual tire. It was thicker and made of a hard material. Must have weighed a ton.

MaineLonghorn, I had an all-women gym in NY, small, all ages but plenty of older women. There is an all-women gym near me, but their classes are all during the day and I need them in the evening.

Even if there are, I really need an instructor. I personally hate cardio, so while I could do the routine on the floor, I’m more likely to say “20 minutes is good enough.” while I’m less likely to skip out of a class early.

Another option: If you’ve gone to the class a few times, you may have noticed many of the same faces. Ask a few of them before or after class, “Is it just me, or is the music really loud?” If it really is just you, get earplugs, but if others agree, talk to the instructor instead of seething in silence.

Yea, the yoga classes I’ve done were no music, just the instructor’s voice telling everyone the pose and gentle corrections. I wouldn’t be able to handle a loud gym and H couldn’t either. I guess we will continue to do our neighborhood walks instead. The two gyms I’ve been near were too loud for our tastes. The Zumba classes are pretty earsplitting even from a distance away. I think there will be an increasingly number of deaf folks from all this loud noise–ICK!

I have sometimes asked for a lower music volume at the place we use- it is convenient, has plenty of equipment and a wide assortment of ages (a U nearby) and physical conditions. So many people use their own earphone music there is no reason to attempt to liven up the place. In fact, a pet peeve of mine is those people who spend time sitting on a piece of equipment fiddling with their phone settings.

Yes, and one of the many reasons I don’t use machines. Typically, such little effort is expended using the machine in the first place anyway and then people reduce their physical “effort” even further by screwing around with their phones. Pet peeve of mine too. Fortunately there isn’t a machine I use, except the rower. And it’s kinda difficult to use the rower and the phone at the same time. But I watch and laugh internally. :))

Try Peloton! I have an at home bike and connect to their nyc studio and mirror it on my tv. I keep the volume where I want it. I’m obsessed with it now. I do the 30 minute hiit class, but they have many instructors, times, styles, etc.

A Peloton bike is a $2,250 for the bike shipped and $39/month.

I have a bike, I didn’t buy a peloton. I use the app which is 12.99/mo

@eyemamom I’m curious about the peloton app and your bike. What kind of bike do you have? A spin bike? Or another kind.

This sounds like something to do in the winter when we can’t get outside. Our treadmill broke and I’m not willing to buy another that we only use for a few months.

I stand in a particular spot in my classes at the gym (front and in the corner) where I am not in the direct line of any of the speakers. The music is just too loud for me otherwise. One instructor had the music so loud that the yoga teacher from across the hall would come and complain that it was too loud in her classroom. When I am taking yoga or pilates the music is low and we can sometimes hear the music or the instructor from zumba or other classes across the hall.

I also had to use earplugs when I went to Zumba classes (the good ones, the foam ones are useless). The teacher was my age and had significant hearing loss from all the loud music.

The yoga classes are all over the place-I had one teacher play country western music during the class. Save a horse, ride a cowboy? Namaste home, thanks.

Luckily I found a good yoga class with a teacher who is only slightly overly peppy. Plays appropriate whale noises music quietly, lol.

LOL

I have a life fitness spin bike. I bought it because I was having trouble with higher impact exercising like the treadmill and hiking. I also hate gyms and I do better when I just go in my basement. The actual peloton bike has the computer on the bike and you can compete against others in the class. I don’t really care about that stuff. Their resistance levels are proprietary, but if they tell me they’re at 50% I can figure that out on my own. I like Jenn Sherman. I’m taking my d to NYC as a 21st bday present and we want to go take a class at the studio with Jenn. On the app you can sort by time, style, instructors, etc. As I said I’m into hiit right now, and maybe in the best shape of my life from that and my weight training. This is the first exercise I can actually say I enjoy.
