Low-Ball Job Offer

^it’s catching!!!

Great News. I hope all goes well.

Did I read he does not have a drivers license? If so have him get one. He doesn’t have to drive but will find having that ID and ability to drive when needed wonderful

I’m drinking a cup of coffee because it’s early, but now I can justify that glass of wine tonight, or two!!! Such good news. I hope people are reading this that are helped. Three kids struggling to get jobs with a CS degree just got hired (mine started yesterday). Is it the economy picking up, luck, timing? There is hope if they keep trying!

@atomom and @busdriver11 …woohoo!! Do share details!! Maybe staying on this thread will bring luck to all!!

Congratulations to all newly employed kids and for getting off their parents’ payroll.

Oh yes, OFF the payroll!

@tpcrd66, my son got a consultant job in NYC. His first week he is taking a course to learn some new web development skills that he’ll be using for his job. I think the key for him is that they were going to have to train almost anyone they hired, so having that 3-5 years of experience was not an issue.

@kappie congrats to your son! I’m so happy for you too!

These first jobs are stepping stones, really, and this one is 45K more in the bank than he had before he stepped on it, and one step closer to the next and better one. I’m sure he’ll learn a lot!

@busdriver11 …that’s terrific!! Did he use a recruiter, campus program or search on his own? Just curious on what worked well for him.

@atomom @busdriver11 Congrats to your sons too!!! And you!

I’m so happy for all of you!

@tpcrd66, while he put out over 400 applications on his own, this opportunity came through a recruiter. He was happy when the recruiters actually started responding to him, but he tried every possible avenue.

S is accepting an offer as software developer for smaller (about 250 employees) but established local company (in KC area). He found the job online himself, not through school or recruiter. I think he applied to 150-200 jobs since last May.

It is a “reasonable” offer (not great, not low-ball) with decent benefits. This was only the 4th in-person interview S had. It was a long, discouraging, depressing 10mo. for S (and me–because S lives at home). I think S will recover his self-worth when he starts working/earning a living. Starting Monday.
It does seem that things picked up in January. Good luck to those still looking! Maybe this is the magic employment thread?

@atomom, congratulations to your son! And @busdriver11, to your son as well. It’s such a relief, isn’t it?

If this is the magic employment thread, I need to get in on it! Put me down as another mother of a computer science student graduating this May. So far the job hunt has been rather discouraging. So hard to watch them go through this after all the hard work they put in the last four years. sigh…
Hoping for some magic! and congrats to all who have launched their kids! kudos and champagne all around!

I can’t WAIT until our D is healthy enough to consider searching for and accepting a job! I’m so happy for all the searchers who have landed jobs & their families!

@southerncalimom, you may not realize…our kids graduated LAST May. If you feel stressed out now, imagine how you’d feel in another year. :open_mouth:

I would tell your child now to really look hard for new grad jobs he or she can get through the recruiters that visit the campus. Go to every job fair and apply to those jobs that recruiters are posting for the new grads. They don’t want to have to compete for the jobs that require years of experience. The people who are recruiting on campus are looking for students with little experience.

OK, well I hope that the CS good karma rubs off on my music major, who is spending spring break in NYC meeting people.

I agree with the going to all job fairs. Our S went to them from his freshman year. In fact, he had us mail him his blazer in the fall of his freshman year so he could look professional at the job fairs. Be sure to have your resume ready to hand out to any of the recruiters.

@southerncalimom I’m a Dad to a 7th grader, so there are many years before my son will be on the job market. Saw your post about your CS major son finding it challenging to land the first job. Given all that I read about the need for CS skills in the market, I was wondering if you had any insight on what challenges your son is seeing. Just things that I’d want to know for future reference.

@busdriver11, Oh my!!! Patience, perseverance and hard work…certainly paid off! Wishing him all the best!

@atomom, It is certainly not easy to find a job these days…it truly is a full-time job looking for one! Wishing him all the best in his new position! Nothing feels better than that first paycheck!!
