I’m proud to report that my daughter will be graduating in May and has a JOB with dental benefits and everything… She’s a civil engineer and will be doing what she wants to do. She started school without a single credit from AP or DE, went for 8 semesters, no co-ops or official internships (worked 8 weeks last summer for a small engineering firm owned by a family friend), took the classes they told her to in the order they told her to, and finished. She also played a sport for 4 years without redshirting and kept her scholarship for that and her merit scholarships that required a certain gpa.
I had told her not to worry about finding a job this last semester in school (she’s really busy) but this opportunity came up and she grabbed it. She was reluctant (putting it mildly) to go to the career counseling office for help with a resume, to look for openings, to just learn about job searching. I’m not really sure how this happened, but it did and I won’t complain that she didn’t go to the career services like I told her to.
Came to visit this page hoping to get some good luck for my DS. He is so picky and often disqualifies himself from jobs. He has a skype interview next week for a CS job in Washington State.
@ChuckleDoodle, I’ll keep my everything crossed for your son if you do the same for mine
I have one that’s launching well, but another who’s been looking for a professional job for months now.
I get so frustrated with him because he will not apply for a job unless he meets ALL criteria. I’ve told him numerous times that it is the job of the panel to determine if he does or does not meet the job requirements. Let THEM disqualify him from the job. Of course, this does not mean he should apply for every job, but if you meet at least 1/2 to 3/4 of the job requirements, then I think it is safe to apply. Plus a lot of the time, getting a job is about making that connection with the interviewer. You may not have the experience they want but if you are that “fit” then they will hire you.
My daughter used to not apply because ‘she didn’t know anything.’ I kept telling her that no one knows anything, but do it 20 times and you’ll know how to do it. She believed me after her job last summer, where she did the same thing over and over and over.
Remind your interviewees that there are no right or wrong answers to the interview questions. What are your assets, what are your negatives, what was your favorite class? No one cares what the answer is, just that there is an answer.
Not to mention that most jobs list far more things than applicants who end up getting the job have in the end. In fact, if you have all of the things listed, you may even be overqualified.
I love job listings for new lawyers that want experience in 7 different areas, writing, court room experience, and then limit it to those with 0-2 years of experience. How is it possible to have experience in litigation, securities, administrative law, appeals and yet have 0-2 years of experience?
One of my favorite quirks of the tech world is that when a new language starts to get into use, invariably a year later there will be jobs asking for people with 3 years of experience using it. Suuuuuuuureeeee…
I’ve been reading through these posts to get some job hunting positive vibes! My d could use a little magical fairy dust at the moment. She graduates in May and has not yet had a real bite after applying for the last couple months. Fingers crossed something happens soon!
Resurrecting this thread. My child just finished summer internship. Walked out the door with a full time job offer upon graduation May of 2019. Definitely relieves the stress of senior year starting in a few weeks. Yay!!!
@busdriver11 Agreed!!! Very interested in the job but plans to continue applying. Has 3 months to accept the offer. If something better comes along will definitely talk with them. Sure makes future interviews much more relaxing and in better bargaining position. If this is the job they stick with it is a great starting position with a well known company to get that coveted experience.
Wishing luck to all as they begin or continue pursuits for jobs and internships!!!
my kiddo has 1 week left at his internship. He’s so unsure about it all. Of course he wants an offer for his ego and professional side. On the other hand, he’s not sure he wants to work there as his GF wants to move to far-away NYC. NO idea how to counsel him; an offer is a good thing. If he’s not offered a job, do you think he can ask why?
The internship was competitive; about 20 kids were hired mostly from midwest colleges. One kid from a big-name college was fired 2 weeks ago. Didnt know you could get fired from an internship! how would you ever explain that? do you get to count the experience on your resume?
