From Google
“ Fordham University’s acceptance rate for the Fall 2024 admissions cycle was 59%”
Average GPA is 3.64. Test optional.
ChatGPT for Georgetown says
“ international engagement, service, global leadership”
Language immersion program, time at Oxford and Imperial should help.
It’s still not a safety. A safety is 80%+ chance of admission. The admit stats I posted came off Fordham’s website. The GPA you posted is that of the entering class, not the admit pool. You need to compare to the admit pool. It’s a solid target but it is NOT a safety.
Would he apply to the business school at Georgetown? That has an 11% admit rate. You’re aware that it is one of the few schools that requires all test scores to be submitted?
I would also add self studying AS math to fill in any gaps in the summer before senior year.
Is this the Oxford summer program you are referring to? https://oxfordsummercourses.com
Yes on the summer program. I know it’s not affiliated with Oxford. Purpose was to spend some time here. He wanted to go there again and to Oxford but we said try something else.
What is AS Math?
Yes Georgetown was his pick. Business school. I told him it’s one of the few that requires SAT scores and he would need to study for SAT to improve his verbal. He should find others. To which he said he will study and “lock in”….
The “Oxford Summer Courses” looks like it’s probably an enjoyable summer program for the student, but this type of program is generally not any help in college admissions, as it would be considered more of a vacation abroad or summer camp, rather than actually studying at Oxford.
It’s possible that the summer program at Imperial that you mentioned considering for next year (I’m assuming you mean this one? Imperial Global Summer School) might be viewed more favorably, since it’s actually run by Imperial and appears to be somewhat selective, but I don’t know. Some university-run programs have a good reputation, while others are seen as more of a cash grab for the university, and I don’t personally know anything about this one.
Just an fyi, more and more U.S. schools are requiring test scores. Penn, on his list, requires them now. Georgetown is unique in that they require you to send ALL of the scores from all SAT/ACT taken.
Yes that is correct. Most college programs including Imperial have an age limit which tends to be 16 years. He didn’t even meet that this year. The program was good though — fun for a 14 year old and a good experience. He had a blast and made friends there. Still in touch with quite a few. I basically sent him there to have fun and get exposure.
A level maths is the two year math course taken in 11th and 12th grade; AS math is the first year of that. The TMUA is based on the syllabus of AS math but at a more challenging level.
Ok I will keep that in mind. If you have any tips on how to prepare him for TMUA or you know any tutors even in UK that can get him ready I would appreciate.
My son was 14 at the time. I sent him so he got to see Oxford and England in general not to build his CV. I asked Imperial if they would make an exception and allow him to do it this year since he only missed the age limit by a few weeks, but they said it was firm and non negotiable. So whatever he will do it next year.
Oxford was a blast and well worth the money and time that was spent there. He was very keen to do again but I said if he went to Cambridge instead I would support it but the mother wanted him to do the language immersion program. So whatever. I hope he enjoys it.
We don’t do these things to give him a edge, but to ensure he has broad exposure and enjoys the summer with new experiences.
