luggage - not for college

how much do they charge for overweight bags?

Is she staying in Beijing? Lush is a decent hangout for expat students.

I know, I know you’re not supposed to hang out with expats–but Beijing can be a very intense experience. A little respite now and again won’t damage her Asian immersion. The founder is a graduate of my son’s school. He went over to teach skiing to the Chinese, came back to do a degree in Chinese and returned to open Lush. Three years ago the Chinese hired him to throw an all night rave party on the great wall ahead of the parties they want to throw for the Olympics.

Also, your D pack something to wear to dance clubs. My younger son says the American students don’t have the proper gear for clubbing. (Nice shoes and clothes you can dance in).

I believe the 40 lbs weight limit is for flights within China…Beijing to Chongquing for example. I flew Northwest in and out.

She’s going to be in Tienjin. Not really a clubbing kind of girl. She loves going to concerts, coffee bars, that kind of stuff. For fun she and her friends went to a cabin in Wisconsin after graduation and played outside all day and then played board games and watched movies at night. But who knows, maybe she’ll try on some dancing shoes…

Who knows, spending a year in a city of 10 million might turn her into a clubbing girl!

bummer kathie re the Mother Lode and your concern about weight issues in China…may I suggest that you call them up to discuss this issue at ebags…as I don’t think the mother lode wins the weight award. I got very good phone support when I had questions…and suggestions. the other websites noted re luggage also offer a lot of testimonials…
recently I ordered a duffel I had to have for one son for a sailing trip and was amazed that Zappos had a good selection of bags and backpacks and they offer free returns and free delivery as well as a huge shoe selection…delivery was instant and I returned four things with zero complaints…they have a very snazzy system where you print out your own return tickets at their website…prices were retail not wholesale but the shipping and return policy was perfect for my needs for another son who needed shoes and clothes and luggage with specific measurements.

Kipplings makes very good sturdy backpack and luggage. My kids use that for traveling and they travel a lot. I disagree with buying inexpensive luggage, especially when it comes to roll aways. If they are not made well, wheels and handles will come off and you just end up spending more money to replace them. As a woman traveling to foreign countries, I would not want to take the chance there’ll be someone there to help me. There is nothing more aggravating than have zipper or wheels not working while traveling.

If your D is going to stay put at one place and will not be doing much traveling in the future, then there is not need to get top of the line, otherwise I would invest in some good luggages and Kipplings is a very good line.
