Macalester Class of 2028 Official Thread

My son was accepted to Macalester with a large Merit award. We are from a big east Coast city and I love the idea of him getting out of the NYC “bubble” - also accepted at Bates, Occidental, Wesleyan, and Grinnell. Macalester is a favorite with my husband, but I did not visit - can anyone tell me what’s to love? his interests are Government, Law (but not pre-law), Policy and STEM/Public Health. He’s a tiny bit shy, not a “frat” type, and not all that athletic - plays Ultimate Frisbee but not on a serious team, more of a fun team.

So academically, Macalester sounds like a good fit as Poli Sci, Government, and Public Policy stuff is a key strength of theirs.

And then Macalester is located in a great area right in the heart of the Twin Cities, so there is a lot to do off campus, also great internship opportunities, and so on.

Finally it is much more an academicky school, not a fratty/sporty school.

Yes it is a school where people grow as both scholars and human beings. People tend to find their tribe at Mac, even very shy folks. It has the perfect blend of intellectualism and practicality, given its location in an urban area. This distinguishes Macalester from other schools of its ilk, like Kenyon, or Grinnell.

Awesome! One of my sons starting at Colby in September! GREAT school. He was ED and took a gap year.

This is interesting that they are putting this year’s admitted students stats so soon. Not sure how this compares with previous years. Acceptance rate seems to be similar to last year but ACT/SAT scores & other stats went up.

Yes, it became manageable and he loved it at fly in.
