Macalester College Early Decision for Fall 2022 Admission

A lot less than the NPC indicated. Not affordable. :frowning:

Oh sorry I didn’t read the question right. I heard it from students on social media platforms.

Thank you. We felt the financial aid was less than we expected and about 8-10K less than the NPC indicated.

Ours was just right. Mac is on the table.

Mac’s merit award was nice, but then the school offered my D22 no additional FA. So the total award was about $5000 less than the NPC predicted – and that’s before Mac’s tuition and room/board went up several thousand dollars. Macalester is looking very unlikely now.

I may have mentioned this before, but I did have a successful financial aid appeal-- I’d recommend asking for a Zoom chat specifically so that you’re not just another piece of paper, and explaining circumstances/competing offers/etc!

nope, I ignore the loans/employment numbers. I was shocked to see any $$, wasn’t expecting a penny.

Ours is about at FAFSA amount with loans and Work-Study. Actually it’s better than expected.

Our cost is about 4k more than expected via NPC - we’ll wait for other offers since the money makes Mac less attractive. To be fair, it may turn out the same for other schools since my husband is a small business owner.

We ran the NPC for Macalester earlier in Spring 2021 and again in the fall. It went up a lot (about $7,500). I was worried Mac might be out of the running. We were pleasantly surprised when the final offer ended up less than the Spring NPC.

the $7,500 increase in cost from 21-22 school year to 22-23 seems significant. I saw the total price and I went wow that seems different than what I remembered.

The increase was for our NPC, not the total cost without aid. I think that went up about $2,000. I figured they changed their methodology, but we were happy that the actual aid was better.

I was just looking on the cost on Scoir (which I thought was 21-22) and it was about a 7.5k difference. I may dig a bit deeper on this!

Also wanted to add for anyone curious, my DS received identical merit from Macalester, Clark, and WPI - to the penny. Then he got decent FA from Macalester - and nothing from the other two, or any of the other 8 schools he got in. So even though the cost is 76K for 22-23, Macalester is giving some significant FA and merit combos.
