Magazines

Business Week, Time, and Scientific American.

Sunset, Mental Floss, Scientific American, Quilters Newsletter.

Have cut down, so not just buy interesting issues of RealSimple, O, Good Housekeeping, Readers’ Digest, etc.

Smithsonian, Southern Living, Consumer Reports, National Geographic
We should drop a few but I can’t figure out which ones.
Plus I read some of the catalogs like magazines… right now I’m puzzling over the outdoor equipment ones to get gear for a summer trip.

People magazine!!! I deal with such “technical and important stuff” at work (not really, but I make my boss think so), I love reading my weekly People magazine on Sat mornings. It is the most mindless magazine. My second favorite is Vanity. I am not ashamed to say that I am a very shallow person.

Anyone else here evaluate service providers - doctors, dentists, auto service departments - on the quality of their magazines? I recently traded cars and more than the courtesy of service staff inquiring if I want a cup of coffee or a soft drink, I’m impressed by the diversity and quality of their magazines and comfortable chairs. I generally hate to take my car in for oil changes, etc., but have found it much more tolerable when a nice glossy issue of Martha Stewart Living or Real Simple is right there to keep me company. Also love to get to the dentist a little early to get a look at recent issues of People ( a guilty pleasure I gave up via subscription long ago).

New Yorker, Old House Interiors

I forgot the rest of the gang’s mags: Dance Spirit, umm some sailing title, Air and Space, Dungeon, Dragon (before those two went out of print). Justine (in lieu of Sweet Sixteen)

Fine Gardening, Mother Jones,Cook’s, Mac Addict, Vogue,Mother Earth news, Organic Gardening,Shambhala Sun, Yoga Journal, More, Oprah, Old House Journal, Sunset, National Geographic, Scientific American, Bust, Verve, “b” itch, Ms. Instyle, Lucky, Marie Claire, Vanity Fair,Outside, Smart Money, Wired, Bark, Discover,Natl Geo Traveler,Atlantic, Seattle,Utne Reader…
The only subscription we get is Vogue, that is my younger daughters

I read the others- here and there- I am in bethievt camp, I don’t want any more paper coming into the house ( which explains why I have magazines in my car)

New Yorker, Harpers, The Sun, Orion, and Isotope are the ones I’m subscribing to these days. Also like to pick up on occasion Atlantic Monthly, Utne, Mother Jones, Believer (actually, all Dave Egger’s-related stuff), and various other little lit mags.

New Yorker, Oprah, Better Homes, Coastal Living, the local “town” or “state” magazines, National Geographic, Smithsonian, high school/college alumni magazines.

Totally no use for the celebrity gossip rags. Not even in the dentist’s office. Even there, there’s something more interesting, even if it’s just looking at pictures of houses I can’t have.

I propose we all chip in and buy Grace a copy of the New Yorker so she’ll understand why we all like it so much!

Newsweek, USNWR, Natl Geographic, NG for Kids, Popular Science.

Anyone ever send in an entry for the New Yorker caption contest? I just did for the first time and I am so excited about it! (Not that I expect to win with all the clever competition, but it’s still fun to give it a try.)

New Yorker here, too. Save the NYT Magazine and Page Six magazine for during the week. Down East to keep up the in-law tradition. DH gets pet industry magazines, but I can only read so many dog training articles when I don’t own a dog.
Favorite way to spend a Sunday afternoon is to go to B&N and drink coffee and read magazines. I can get through about $200 worth of specialty magazines in about 3 hours.

The 15 yo gets Air and Space. Mathson used to get PC World and PC Mag, he disses them now, but dh reads them. Dh gets a bunch of science mags like Cell and Nature, not sure just which ones, but there’s always a huge stack on his side of the bad. I get Fine Homebuilding (my fave) and some industry freebies that are aimed at developers and contractors. I like the New Yorker, but never have had time to read it. I barely get through the NYT’s Sunday magazine. (Doesn’t help that we have to do the puzzle.) Scientific American also, not sure if anyone actually reads it. Also various college magazines, Sierra Club magazine, the USAA magazine fill up the powder room magazine rack.

Oops almost forgot the cooking magazines - Cooks Illustrated and Bon Appetit.

Just wondered–what do you all do w/your old mags? I always mean to bring them to a hospital waiting room (I’ve done that a few times) but sometimes they pile up & I just recycle. Wish there was a better use (we have tons of free subscriptions–gifts, etc.–at our house).

Our town park has a rack for unwanted paperbacks and magazines. Schools can sometimes use the magazines with good pictures for projects. Check with teachers and librarians.

Sometimes gyms have racks for magazines. Mostly we just recycle. We keep the Scientific Americans because they are often useful for projects and the cooking mags are filed in my basement by month. I save Fine Homebuilding, rip articles out of the rest.

My husband and I have each done it a couple of times, but they don’t seem to like our humor…

We subscribe to The New Yorker, The Economist, The Atlantic, Newsweek, Philadelphia, Oprah (but I think that won’t be renewed), and one of the home magazines. Also the Sunday NYT. And a lot of Vogues seem to show up around the house.

I can’t read all of them; I probably read about 30% of The New Yorker, 60% of every other Economist, and half of every Atlantic. I have stopped reading Newsweek altogether. I sometimes look at the pictures in Vogue.

I used to love going to my D’s orthodontist. I would catch up on all my magazine reading. When I go to my chiropractor I don’t mind a bit of a wait since they have such a good magazine selection. Most focus on health or Yoga but they also have People. It can’t ever bring myself to buy People but love to read it in the waiting room. The receptionist said People is the their most popular magazine in the waiting room. Aside from Surfer which they have to keep behind the counter since it seems to wander off.
I also love to read magazines on planes. Before a trip I will head off to Costco and see what they have on their rack. I like More, Oprah and Time for airplanes. The articles are short enough that I don’t lose my focus. I like Vanity Fair for the beach. Time magazine for before sleep if I am too tired to read.
My kids have gotten Lucky, Seventeen, Teen Vogue and Girls Life. My son mainly bike magazines.
