Make Do And Mend

My lifestyle hasn’t changed much due to the quarantine. I have been living the ‘make do and mend’ lifestyle for my entire adult life. Cloth napkins, towels for cleaning (we use very few paper towels), reuse store plastic bags as trash can liners, waste very little food, and I do mend clothing (including socks). I also made fabric masks from sheets - a sheet with a tight weave is ideal.

I did cut my kids’ hair when they were growing up. The youngest is home now (college senior/firstie - will graduate on 6/13!!) but I don’t think I"ll be cutting his hair. When he gets back to school, the barber will have a long line outside his door of cadets who badly need to get their hair cut and back to regulation length!!

There is one thing I did before the quarantine that I can’t do now - and I really miss it. I am part of a local FB neighborhood swap/give away group. You post what you have to offer and you can also post what you are looking for. It’s been a great way for me to rehome things that we no longer need and I’ve picked up a few items that I can use also. A win for everyone. We have suspended the page until the quarantine is over.

@ucbalumnus - These were beyond saving. If things aren’t right where I can spot them, I forget them. The crisper is where too much produce has gone to die. I also have to admit that the grapes and green pepper were aspirational shopping. I eat them, but DH doesn’t, so if I forget them… I’ve resolved to only stock fruit that can live on the kitchen counter, and leave the crisper for romaine and pre-cut baby carrots which DH does eat.

My community has one of those. It’s actually been more active given people who seem to be using time around the house to overhaul and clean out. Some stuff is very generously offered because much could be sold for a decent sum, at least in non-pandemic times.

It all seems to be conducted in a contactless fashion. Left at doorsteps and porches. Easier to do when no $ needs to change hands. I’d have no problem leaving my own items on my porch or curbside for pickup and if there was something to fetch, have the husband do it contactless with gloves and a mask and let it quarantine in the garage for awhile or outside on a sunny day.

Same in our community, @doschicos. We have an intranet and can advertise things left out for others to pick up. I have a box outside our front courtyard gate with a “free face masks” sign. They sanitize while baking in the AZ heat. The box is empty every time I go out to refill though I never see anyone taking them.

There are two stores I really miss and can’t wait to have reopened - JoAnn’s fabric and the thrift store. JoAnn’s I need to reopen because, believe it or not, I’m out of white thread, on my last black and cream. I’ve been making masks and I can use other colors but I don’t want to. I want to use white.

The thrift store because I’ve used a lot of my fabric stash and I buy most of it at the thrift store. Lots and lots of people donate the fabric they are never going to use.

I love the thrift store so I’m glad there are people who don’t mend or reuse.

JoAnn’s is doing curbside delivery in my area. Also, they offer online ordering and delivery.

Can’t you buy thread online? I haven’t brought thread in a store for ever. Buy large spools, serger thread even as these are not heavy duty items. I used to get stuff on ebay from estate sales but will give the op shops a try when they open again as I never considered those sold fabric!

JoAnn’s is open in our town, both instore and pickup, but I have been ordering online (many colors of thread, Pellon, etc.) and doing curbside pickup. You have to wait for an e-mail telling you your order is ready, but it’s only been a two- or three-day wait for pickup at our local store. Amazon has been great for elastic, but about eight-day delivery.

Almost everything I’ve tried to order online and pick up at JoAnn’s says “Come to the store to shop for this item.” Kind of defeats the purpose. I suppose I could order thread that way, but really don’t want to put in an order for $4 for thread (I WANT A NEW IRON!) My mother wants some yarn but that also says “Come to the store…” Even some little things like a bias tape maker is only ‘shop in the store’.

One of the JoAnns store is on the wrong side of County Line Rd. The county to the south is opening next week, the county to the north is not.

@doschicos - I don’t know why the moderators of that FB page chose to suspend the page since most were doing contactless pick-ups. I would guess it was from an over abundance of caution. Frankly, I thought the page should remain active since shopping is more difficult now. But I’m not a moderator, so I get no say in the matter. Meanwhile, the stuff I’d like to offer is piling up.

^^^ @bookreader1 some of our local pages were suspended too. I don’t have a problem with this. Technically “stay at home” means stay at home. So by encouraging people to pick up items in the neighborhood or across town is encouraging more people to be out, maybe making extra stops, etc.

I can see it both ways. And I can respect it both ways.

We will get there. That junk has been in our houses most likely a long time - it can sit and wait it’s turn for a new home for a bit longer.
