Make money or contribute to society?

Well, then, I’m rather surprised that such high-earning and educated people seem to pass on to their children that the only / primary way to money is in finance.

But how is it any different than a father who is doctor then have a child choose to become a doctor?

I don´t think any parent ever tells a kid a profession is the only way to make money. A kid may decide to choose the same path because his/her parent enjoys it.

I don’t know any doctors who tell their kids that the only way to make a good living is to be a doctor. In fact, frankly, I think more doctor-parents discourage their kids from going into medicine than encourage it. Some cultures may be different.

No, it´s not a cultural thing. Doctors maybe discouraging their kids in becoming doctors due to the latest health reform. I don´t know because we don´t have anyone in my family who is a doctor, maybe it´s because we don´t like the sight of blood. But we have engineers and lawyers.

My DW is a physician and has been discouraging young people for years from going into medicine - too much control by the insurance companies; too many long hours, time away from the family, and the phone ringing in the middle of the night; and too much of the malpractice issue.

I think the OP had a reasonably clear, reasonably concise, reasonably well thought out question. That represents ASPECTS of the kinds of choices many young people finding themselves needing to make.

Thread drift is inevitable and all, but perhaps we could return to the issues raised by the OP?

Well, my H and I have worked hard enough to be able to send our kids off in the world without college debt and therefore our answer to them is … do what you want to do, what you love, what you find interesting. Be aware that some jobs will pay the bills better than others, but whatever you do, don’t chase something for the money just for the sake of the money. It’s not the kind of person you want to be.

I don’t know why I’d encourage or discourage my kids towards any profession, really. It’s their lives, they get to choose what interests them. I had my chance.

Pizzagirl: some of us have to work at the jobs we have “for the sake of the money” because we need “the money” to pay our mortgages, food and clothes for our kids, as well as tuition bills. Does that meet with your approval or am I forced to be the type of person you do not think any of us should be?

Do what you like, glido – I don’t particularly care. A question was posed by the OP, and I answered it.
