Making a college list! Northeast/midwest. 4.0 student, wants creative career, well rounded education [3.9UW/1390 SAT, <$50k]

I don’t have anything to add to your discussion, but will always shout out a great 1980’s movie reference!

Good luck with your search!

Of the colleges I suggested upthread, this is how I would classify them:
Big city or cool college town

  • DePaul (Chicago)
  • Ithaca
  • Lawrence (Appleton, WI)
  • U. of Cincinnati
  • U. of Minnesota – Twin Cities
  • Virginia Commonwealth (Richmond)
  • Webster (St. Louis)

Still could be worth investigating

  • Baldwin Wallace (almost put it in the category above…it’s in a Cleveland suburb)
  • Sarah Lawrence (Edited: Bronxville…and moving it to this category since it’s what I did with Baldwin Wallace, but, again, so close that I previously had it in the category above))
  • Connecticut College
  • Muhlenberg
  • SUNY New Paltz
  • SUNY Purchase

Unlikely to hit the spot

  • Bard

Does he appreciate the smaller schools, too, or is he still figuring out his preferences? It could be useful to figure that out closer to home, if there are convenient colleges to test those theories out (both college size as well as cool college town vs. more remote vs. big city).

If this trip is partly designed to figure out some of the preferences, Ithaca and New Paltz are both mid-sized, while the other schools veer toward small. I mapped out some of the northeastern schools I mentioned so you can see their relative locations.

Below is a map of the midwestern colleges I mentioned (plus St. Olaf, a CC fave), to get a better sense of locations and what might (or might not) make a reasonable road trip. And though it’s not marked on here, I think others have mentioned Macalester which is located in the Twin Cities (like U. of MN), and could be a good fit as well.

Sarah Lawrence is not in the Bronx. It is in Bronxville, a leafy and upscale suburb in Westchester County and a half hour train ride to midtown Manhattan.

What about a major like digital media and story telling. Digital Media and Storytelling, B.S.: Degrees: Indiana University

More common than you would think.

I haven’t checked the majors at Loyola Chicago, but that is one worth checking out!

I think they do have it at Loyola.

Edited: Looks like it’s an MA there.

Champlain College - Digital Humanities major. Burlington is a great, progressive city and he will likely get very good merit.

Michigan State - Digital Storytelling

Any thoughts on where he may be headed after college?

Look into Oberlin. Great for artsy, creative types. Even better is that it can be affordable. It was $86,900 this year for tuition, fees, room & board. But wait . . . If you live in any one of a dozen Midwest states, you are an automatically eligible for a $25,000 scholarship. This would give you a fighting chance of getting it close to your $50,000 number.

On the actual results threads, @goldbug shared that her S25 received $32k in merit from Oberlin.

Sarah Lawrence: Cliques, Mental health issues, mean girls, mean girls, and more mean girls. $84K to go there and ranked in the bottom 3% in terms of value.

Ranking is plummeting, acceptance rate is above 70% (They say it is 59%, don’t believe them). Just about anyone can and will get in if they can pay full tuition. Even the college’s strongest suppporters admit it is an unfriendly campus with a lot of very unhappy students. A lot of the freshman class is transferring.

Sad to hear, as I know a couple of alum that are VERY successful and loved their time there. (including former Pres. of IFC Films)

I’d love to see an analysis of “mean girls”. Based on what gets posted on Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, etc. I’d bet that there are a lot of huge flagship U’s that beat Sarah Lawrence hands down.

Do the young women at Sarah Lawrence decide who to let into their social circle based on expensive hair extensions or professionally done false eyelashes? Do the young women at Sarah Lawrence care if your MOTHER was a member of their sorority or social group way back when?

Cannot imagine a worse way to choose a college. There are mean people everywhere- this is not a SL phenomenon. And unfriendly campuses- imagine being the freshman heading off to a college where the parents hire professional decorators to “do” the dorm room- you’ve got a comforter and a mismatched set of towels from Goodwill and you’ve got to room with the people who needed a professional to coordinate their boudoir?
