Map of the Top 100 US Colleges

Thin air?

@Corinthian - Expand the map and you’ll see them with Pomona College.

Thanks @ClaremontMom. I see them now. Had to really zoom in.

That list compared the selectivity of the USNWR top 50 national universities and top 50 national LACs (using the USNWR formula for “selectivity”, based on admit rates + test scores + HS class standing).

It excluded Reed, Texas, and PSU (which are on the OP’s map, but are not in either USNWR top 50).
It included some other colleges (such as Dickinson) that are not on the OP’s map.

Identifying “top” or “most selective” schools is largely a matter of definition and available data resources. Some posters might question having, say, Dickinson and Skidmore on the map but not PSU or TOSU.

the list is done with a shovel.
you go into a horse stable and take the shovel and start shoveling.

Thank you for taking the time to put this together. Obviously, one can quibble over just about any list that involves rankings, but this is very helpful in giving an idea where a lot of these colleges really are.

Hey! They left out Bama! X(

Was I the only one unsurprised completely by the results? To me, even if the list is very off, I still think it would reflect what we already know: the northeast, california, and the northern midwest are the highest concentrations of good schools, the south is lacking, and within those areas many are around cities. I don’t think it’s a particularly helpful map, or is that just me?

It’s helpful if you are planning visits and wanted to see directive colleges that are near each other, which was the stated intent.

*selective

this map leaves out too many colleges to really be of use to anyone.

Google has LOTS of work to do…

Google didn’t make the map, the op did. I appreciate the effort and would have loved to have had it last year when we were planning visits.

There is at least one wall map available (more colleges are on it, though), published by Hedberg.
