Marie Kondo “Joy of Tidying”

We spent a week in an upscale condo in HI. Kitchen basics were provided. A couple of aloha shirts and shorts for Mr. and a couple of sundresses for me, a handful of undies, swimsuits, some warmer clothes, some flipflops and sandals… I felt so liberated and I know I could live like that for a loooong time. Kids will be fighting who gets to visit next… Dream on, BB.

I lived for 2.5 months in Hong Kong in one room with what we could bring in a couple of suitcases. But I was happy to come home to my stuff. ;D

I spent the afternoon Marie Kondo-ing my dresser and the shelves in my closet. It was really easy and pretty satisfying. I’m optimistic I’ll maintain my drawers because it’s so nice to be able to see everything. The jury is out on the shelves in the closet (where I keep all my sweaters) because I had to put them in baskets and time will tell whether I have the patience to pull out the basket, select a sweater and put the basket back. Sounds minor as I write it but we’ll see…

The only drawer I haven’t done yet is my sock drawer. I have a plastic diamond grid organizer that works really well so I’m not sure it’s necessary. Dh, otoh, has more socks than the organizer so I’m going to try his and see how it goes.

@collage1, I did my husbands sock drawers, he has 3. One for business socks and the other 2 for patterned, colored, etc. what a mess. I took everything out and he had 15 unpaired socks. I threw them away. He still has 45 pair, yes 45 pair…not including business socks. He won’t get rid of anything.

I rolled them all and placed back. At least they are now all visible and fit nicely. If you can’t find a grid, then roll them, starting with the toe.

I’m making progress with DH!! Over the last week, I’ve gotten him to agree to part with four rugby referee flags and with an entire garbage bag of homemade videotapes of movies that one can now get on Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc.

I have to go verrrrrrry slowly with him or he gets – I don’t know – anxious. Prickly. Uncomfortable.

@conmama, wow – 45 pair AFTER removing the singles! I thought dh had a lot. I ended up doing his sock drawer late last night and his first impression was favorable. We’ll see how things go over time.

How many socks is normal? I may need to redo my sock drawer again! I have footies, no shows, ankle, some are athletic, some are dress, black, patterns, fuzzies, wool hiking, etc.

If I take my athletic socks out of the mix (I probably have 10-12 pair of those but use them frequently) I probably have another 10-12 pairs of everything else put together. Not big on socks. I feel like socks are one of those things I gravitate to certain ones 90% of the time anyway.

I’m not really a sock person. I have maybe 12-15.

I donated my wedding gown to Angel Gowns last week. That got rid of a very large box in a box in a box!

Love it, BB. Wish my life were as uncluttered as a hotel suite. Of course, with the handyman with his own tools stored elsewhere and daily tidy by a maid.

I don’t seem to need that many pair of socks. Maybe 5 low cut thick socks I wear with athletic shoes, 3 pair no show for low shoes/loafers and 3-5 pair of black midcalf that I wear with boots. I live in a warm climate so my wool socks for skiing/cold weather are kept elsewhere with my ski gear.

For dh, it’s a fashion statement so he has solid, lots of patterned, athletic, etc. I’m sure he could weed some out but that’s not something he would choose to do and is too low on my list for me to bring up!

If he likes his socks I have no problem with lots of socks. I’ve got over 30 in my sock drawer and a few more hiking socks in a different drawer. I could probably get rid of most the knee high thin socks which I rarely wear anymore - I don’t wear dressy pants much. I like to have enough for two weeks, because every once in a while we don’t do the usual weekend laundry.

re: socks
My first venture into Kondo land was the sock drawer. It was very satisfying! I’m sure I had way more than 45 pairs @conmama! I had gotten some for Christmas for a few years before I said “enough!” but other than that, it is a mystery why I had so many pairs.
Very interesting way to start with the spark joy business because I would pick up some pairs and just feel “ick” which is way different from joy! Got rid of a huge pile, some trashed, others donated if perfectly good but just not things I liked to wear for whatever reason. I made dividers out of small boxes and it’s been great, going on about 2 years now. I have bought about two or three pairs of athletic socks since then to replace ones that were worn out.

I think it’s funny - Marie Kondo-ing has become a verb

I worked a Marie Kondo reference into an article I’m editing for work about file-storage guidelines for lawyers. I’m emotionally preparing myself for my boss to edit it out because I suspect she hasn’t heard of MK. But nearly everyone else has, haven’t they?

I have only 3 kinds of socks. Black mid calf I wear with most things. Some no show ped type things and white belega short socks for running shoes. I don’t need to pair them because they are all the same. I have drawer liners to separate the three but it really wouldn’t matter if they were all together. Makes life much much simpler.

So DH and I are getting ready for a week-long trip for our son’s wedding. Last night, DH was having a fit because he couldn’t find a certain pair of pants he wanted to take. He looked all through his closet which – no surprise – is chock full of things he doesn’t wear and has no idea what they are. Then he looked in the other two closets he uses, plus his armoire, plus the other bureau in the other bedroom that he uses. Still couldn’t find them. Finally, he found them at the bottom of a pile on a chair in the spare bedroom.

I was biting my tongue so hard to keep from saying things like, “If you’d Marie-Kondo your closet, you’d be able to find things right away,” and “Maybe you should go through your clothes and get rid of things you don’t wear,” and, and, and . . . .

I just kept telling him I didn’t know where his pants were and suggesting places they might be. He was so annoyed with himself that of course he wound up yelling at me.

@rosered55 My ds2 is a radio producer, and I’m always giving him show ideas. In January, I suggested talking about Marie Kondo, and he said, “Mom, NO ONE but you knows who she is.” Three weeks later, he said that I was right.

@“Youdon’tsay” – I think most guys think organization stops at “what pile on the floor do I throw this on?”
