Mass Shooting at Brown

So the 24 year old veteran from Wisconsin whose name, photo, and LinkedIn profile were distributed nationally is NOT a person of interest?

I’m not a lawyer but am curious if anyone knows what legal recourse this man has, if any?

You might look up Richard Jewell and see how that played out.

I thought of that immediately.

I’m curious if ā€œperson of interestā€ versus ā€œsuspectā€ provides some sort of libel protection for law enforcement.

I smell lawsuits. One only needs to look to Richard Jewell.

Regardless of legal standing, I see settlement money in the future.

Seems there may be some traction now in the investigation. Several news outlets (including a local Boston TV station and The Boston Globe) reporting that shooter may have been identified but not yet found/in custody and also that there is, after all, a possible link to the MIT professor shooting (possibly same rental car used).

Apparently the scope of the investigation now includes New Hampshire.

I wonder if there will be a connection to the MOT shooting which had not been highly publicized.

I’m glad the danger appears to be over. I’m guessing all the students would have been a mess going back.

So horrible - we watch all these kids doing their best to get to college. And these lives were taken just like that. And let’s not forget, many remain injured.

The article indicated the belief that the shooter was the same, and that the shooter and the MIT professor had attended the same educational institution in Portugal.

I believe that is the current conclusion.

It would have been a hell of a coincidence especially given how close Providence is to Boston.

The articles explain his past connection to Brown.

Finals were canceled, and students were sent home. (My friend’s son had a close call :sad_but_relieved_face:)

I wonder if they’ll ever find out the shooter’s motive.

ā€œ He began attending the school in 2000, seeking a Ph.D. in physics. He took a leave of absence the next year and officially withdrew from Brown in 2003, according to an affidavit filed in the case.ā€ Probably not a logical reason to go after people in the building that he was previously affiliated with, but it’s hard to rationalize irrational behavior.

No social media accounts?

I’m appreciative of the person who gave the tip to catch him but I can’t help but wonder, had he come forward sooner, would the MIT professor still be alive today.

Given he dropped out of Brown and went to college with the MIT professor, I’d imagine there’s a tie there. Was any specific student at Brown targeted or just the building.

They often come up with conclusions but I’m not sure how they do. We’ve still lost three humans with many injured.

We talk about college selection and it’s such an unknown. Obviously all these folks chose the wrong college but you don’t get to make that choice again.

It seems very unlikely to me since he hadn’t been taking classes at Brown since 2001 (and only taken grad classes for a year 2000-2001, then LOA before withdrawing in 2003ish), these students were taking intro to economics and weren’t even born back then. He would have likely taken most of his classes in that building, apparently. (I am close enough to get entire press conferences on local news - Brown president surmised that would have been case in Q&A).

I suspect, though have no way of knowing, he is having a mid-life crisis and reliving his past - failed grad school - blaming an undegrad rival, etc.

It’s still unclear why he targeted the engineering building. Sadly, we may never know.

Why he went back to Brown to do this seems like the ā€œwhyā€ to me.. but of all the buildings at Brown, the one where he took his classes seems like the most likely candidate to me…
