Massachusetts 14 day self-quarantine rules & College arrivals

I reached out for further guidance. I will post when I hear back.

Update: the MA 14 day quarantine is now mandatory with a $500 per day fine for violations. Exempted states are those in New England, NY, NJ, and HI. It sounds like MA will have a form for visitors to fill out. It will be easy to catch those entering by plane. I’m not sure what they will do for cars.

The governor said during the press conference today that cars will not be stopped. The quarentine is on an honor system and the form to fill out prior to arriving in MA is online. The order goes into effect August 1.

I’m sure all colleges will comply with the State and Tufts has already stated this. Therefore any student who is entering the state would need to quarantine for 14 days coming from a hot spot…very easy to provide and ask for proof. It will be more than an honor system.

more details below. seems if you provide a negative COVID (72 hrs) you don’t have to quarantine

How does that work? Just because someone was negative 3 days ago it doesn’t mean they are now.

And good luck getting a test and results in your hands in 72 hours.

Nothing like springing this on college students 3-4 weeks before they arrive back at school.

All MIT students returning to campus and using campus facilities will be required to be tested for Covid-19 upon arrival and to self-quarantine for a full seven days. After quarantining, students will need to take a second test. If both tests are negative, students will be allowed to access campus buildings to attend classes, perform research, etc.

All incoming students must also complete the Student Medical Report Form, with no exceptions. If students fail to meet the deadline for submitting this form, their registration status will be placed on hold.

Students will also be required have a flu shot during the 2020-21 academic year. Exceptions will be made for religious or medical reasons only.

all students arriving at Tufts will test upon arrival and quarantine until results are back.

all students will take a rapid test every three days for the entire semester.

MA of all states needs to be vigilant due the the massive number of college students arriving from all over the country and world. I totally agree with these precautions.

anyone receive quarantine guidance from schools in the Boston area?

Here’s a question…how can a Massachusetts parent possibly move in their incoming freshman student at schools outside the Northeast? Not everyone can quarantine 14 days after a 48 hour trip to help their child.

@GKUnion, they would also have the option of getting a Covid test within 72 hours before returning to MA with a negative result. That is, if you can schedule one AND have time for helping your kid move in. Sure thing.

Not every parent takes their child to school. Kids arrive on trains, planes, and automobiles. I arrived on an airplane. I was lucky to have friends in the area and they picked me up and delivered me to school but in these times I could have taken a Lyft or taxi.

@CottonTales Almost every Covid testing site I’ve seen is for in-state residents only, unless you are symptomatic.

@twoinanddone Agreed, but EVERY parent I know that has had a freshman head off to college has moved their child in. Now, sophomore year and beyond is a completely different situation.

Things have changed. You send your freshman to college ALONE now if you live in a hot bed state and the kid is going into a state that has rules like MA and NY do. Many kids do come solo. I know I did when I went off to college. I was 17 years old and coming from overseas

@GKUnion we are facing that exact problem right now. We were planning to go to PA next month for a few days to move my son back to school and to visit our daughter who lives there. This order has thrown a giant monkey wrench in the works. My H has a doctor appointment a couple days after we return. So now we are trying to decide what to do. Cancel the trip and tell S good luck moving in by yourself and sorry D we can’t see you? Or we are also considering just me going and then I will quarantine when I return but H will be ok to go to the doctor. For now we are just hoping PA gets added to the exemption list.

@me29034 Sorry to hear that. That’s the thing about Massachusetts, you can get to a lot of states(and Canada) by car in around 10 hours.
