I am still a bit dazed with the Carnegie Mellon full tuition. It was so unexpected. I am just so happy for D. Here is the funny story. D received the regular sized envelop from Carnegie, not the FAT letter one. She was so sure that it ?s a rejection based on the envelop size. Imagine her surprise , it?s a scholarship letter congratulating her. D made me call the Admission office next day to make sure the letter is ?for real?. The Admission confirmed the acceptance and scholarship and said the FAT letter should come soon. Still waiting for the FAT letter but all is well.

In addition to the academic scholarship, Muhlenberg gave d $1,500 talent scholarship in dance. Very exciting!

? What’s BF? What’s FRAG? (Full Room and gorp? grapes? gnosh?)

BF = Bright Futures, a Florida only scholarship reward. I assume FRAG is a Florida program also. ( I believe it is the Florida 'Rasslin Alligators Grant)

So today I finally got my official acceptance packet from NYU, and they offered me a $10,000 scholarship and a spot in their Presidential Honors Scholar Program. It’s not much money considering how incredibly expensive NYU is (bottomline = $48,763), but considering the scholarship is partly based on need, and I don’t have any, I think it is pretty generous (from a notoriously ungenerous school). Plus my parents would be more than happy to accept a $10,000 rebate :).

However, they are not making it easy to figure out exactly what I need to do to keep the scholarship and exactly what the Honors Program entails, which I find somewhat worrying and will need to find out before I decide if I’m going to attend or not.

That’s pretty close, Curm - it’s the Florida Resident Assistance Grant for kids who attend a private Florida college.

Thanks Curmudgeon & patsmom - all I could think of was that the school promised to provide the student with a boyfriend!

Ssooooo sorry about the abbreviations. My son would die if he got a BoyFriend, however he would love Free Random Access to Grub. BF is Brite Futures, a scholarship for Florida residents attending Florida State schools. It pays either 100% of tuition or 75% of tuition to the State schools of FL based on SAT scores , GPA and community service. FRAG is a grant the State of FL gives to FL residents who attend a private school in FL. These scholarships are funded by the state lottery. It is FLorida’s way of encouraging it’s brite students to attend school in FL. (Worked for us). Private schools in FL give FL residents credit ($4000) for 100% BF . (not sure of the $ for the 75%).The BF credit and the FRAG($3000) with S’s merit scholarship made the cost of a private education in FL the same cost (practically) as the state cost. These scholarships are part of the reason the Florida State Schools are so difficult to get into. Many of the kids are not paying full tuition. We were so hopeful our S would decide on a FL school to take advantage of these savings, however, we did not expect him to choose a FL school, since we moved from the North when he was a freshman in HS . After visiting many schools (practically paying a years worth of tuition), he decided on a school that best fit his wish list. The only drawback for him was UM is not in Vermont. (he is a skier). Again sorry about the confusion . I am just thrilled to be done!!!

S received Full Tuition to College of St. Rose Accelerated MS program (20K x 4 yrs)
18Kyr Jacksonville U
18K yr St John’s U
15K yr Seton Hall
13K Western New England
High Point U offered scholarship full ride competition but could not attend that w/e so No Scholarship offer!
Stats SAT 2330 690 Math 640 Verbal 700 writing ACT 26 top 10% class 95 av. weighted 97.4. Will attend St Rose even though WNEC was original first choice but Scholarship vs cost decrepency is to large to be worth it. Can’t beat Masters in 4 yrs (has 24 credits going it) for free tuition. He is happy with St. Rose and like the idea of being in a city since he was not raised in one. I am happy it is only 90 miles away after Son 1 went 1000 miles away!

Thanks to all the help I received on CC, especially with wisdom of Carolyn and other sages, my daughter built her list from the bottom up. It turned out to be great advice in a very competitive year. These are her results:

University of Maryland Scholars Program: $8,000 Presidential Scholarship
University of Arizona Barrett Honors College: (near) full ride
University of Rochester: $15,000 per year merit award

Stats:

3.7 UW GPA at competitive math/science magnet school
New York State resident

Propective Japanese language major

Best of luck to anyone else still waiting for results, and thanks to all!

Son’s Results - Merit only and not including National Merit College money (four year unless noted):

University of Michigan (in-state) $10,000 LSA Dean’s, $1,500 Regents (one year)
University of Chicago $10,000 University Scholar
Grinnell College $15,000 Trustee Honor
Kalamazoo College $12,000 Honor, $1,500 Tradition

You can find my son’s stats in the Stats Profile under stewie314.

Here’s the summary now that all the merit offers are in. S applied almost exclusively to merit aid schools where he had a shot based on his stats (thanks, Curm, Carolyn and others who helped steer him to those schools!) and got scholarship money where he expected he might and even from a couple of places he didn’t expect! Briefly, his stats were ACT 34, 4.12/3.56 GPA, top 7%, National Hispanic Scholar, excellent community service ECs.

Rice - $14,500 Barbara Jordan Scholarship (**attending)
Denison - $15,000 Founders Scholarship
Trinity U - $13,000 + $2,000 for National Hispanic Scholar
Rhodes - $13,000 Dean’s Scholarship
Elon - $3,750 Presidential + $6,000 Honors Fellows Scholarship
Davidson - minimum $5,000 guaranteed - eligible for up to $20K if he had gone to Scholar’s Weekend for interview but had already decided to attend Rice so chose not to go.
UF - approx. $3,600 Bright Futures Scholarship

D got a nice package from Willamette yesterday - a merit scholarship and a grant that add up to $20,000 per year, renewable for 4 years. So now she has three schools that would cost us between $10K-$13K a year, which is less than our flagship state U.

Congratulations on all the good news at this time of year!

S just received a very nice scholarship offer from Bard - $20k per year. However, he has already decided on Tulane, which not only offered slightly more - $22k - but is a better fit for him all around. Congrats and good luck to everyone!

S just received a $4,000/year band scholarship on top of the $8,000/year academic scholarship previously awarded from University of Tulsa. I guess the extra $200 invested in a few months of pre-audition private lessons paid off!

University of Tulsa is a great but much underrated school

Bookmom:

I am new to this and my D was just accepted in a Pharmacy School. What is Founders Scholarship and how does one go about submitting a petition? Thax

S, who is taking a gap year, got a $10 k a year Dean’s Scholarship from Rollins, his first choice. We are still working on our financial aid paperwork (S decided to apply very late), and are hoping for decent financial aid or else he’ll have to go to his safety, which he doesn’t like. (Yes, I did tell S to apply to safeties that he’d like!).
