Letters of recommendation may be a less obvious way to tip the playing field in favor of applicants at well resourced academically elite high schools. Students at typical public schools may have overworked counselors who barely know them, and overworked teachers who refuse or ration recommendations, which may not necessarily be top quality. The well resourced academically elite high schools likely have dedicated college counselors and teachers trained to write top quality recommendations.
