Match Me - 11th Grade Daughter [CA resident, 4.0 GPA]

Hmm, I’m confused about this. I thought she would need one year of art. What is the Capstone project? I didn’t realize the student needed to be at a mastery level of an art form.

Your D may want to add more UCs and CSUs to her in state list.

FYI, S24 with UW 4.0 and UC CAP W 4.31, 2 APs and 2 Honors (not include senior year). Applied 7 UCs and 4 CSUs for Aero/Mach ENG, only got accepted to UCR, CPP, SDSU, waitlist/accepted UCD. (For OOS, got accepted to uDub, TAMU, Ohio State and etc.,)

If your D really want to stay in CA, she needs to add more target/safety schools. Good Luck.

@Gumbymom perhaps you can clarify the arts requirement. I don’t think a capstone project is essential…but I’m not from CA. My understanding was that whatever arts course it was…needed to be for the full year.

UC VPA requirement is listed below. Capstone/Honors courses are not required.

One yearlong course of visual and performing arts chosen from the following disciplines: dance, music, theater, visual arts or interdisciplinary arts — or two one-semester courses from the same discipline is also acceptable.

So music classes are fine.

You aren’t by any chance in the Central Valley are you?

The best gift you can give her in 11th grade is to help her find a school (or two) that she is very likely to be admitted to and that she would be very happy to attend.

Take a trip (or several trips) to visit different campuses. Try to visit Merced, Riverside, Santa Cruz, Davis, SLO and SDSU. Sign up for a campus tour, an admissions info session, and housing tour (if offered). When there, visit the pre-health advising office. Ask them what type of support they provide to students who are interested in careers in health professions. Spend time in the community where the students live and hang out. Get lunch or dinner in the student community and let her people watch. Without considering rankings or prestige, can she see herself fitting in and thriving at those campuses and in their communities?

No, the description just displays more options and I added it because some students don’t have a lot of Fine Arts options nor coursework at their high schools in VPA.
Students who, in any vein, are going into a musical education at a UC, want to do some of these capstone projects to supposedly “increase” their chances.
