Match Me Business Administration (Maybe) Fringe D1 Runner (If I can do well this fall) [NY resident, 3.7 GPA, 1440 SAT]

Not exactly sure what the Major is going to look like. Pretty undecided but if I had to bite the bullet it would probably be Business Administration / Some sort of management.

Demographics: US Citizen. Senior, Suburban (Long Island). School is ~90th of 1200 in the state. public school. 1600 students. Decently competitive. Possibly a recruitable athlete if everything goes right this fall. XC/TF.

Not going to ED

Looking for Urban/Suburban Schools within 4hr drive of Western LI. Preferably where it’s warmer but not a neccessity. Only 3 I know I’m certainly applying to are Northeastern, BU and Binghamton. I’m lowkey horrified because I dedicated so much time & energy into running and I’m probably cooked for recruitment unless I make a big jump this fall. 4:36/10:03/16:32 guy if anyone’s familiar with track times.

Financial constraints?

How about D3 schools? Babson, Brandeis, Denison, Dickinson, Gettysburg, CMU, CWRU, W&L, Emory…?

Is Italian something you want to keep pursuing? URI’s International Business Program has an Italian track; the program includes both study and internship abroad. And URI’s Italian department is particularly strong. There’s also Marist, which has its own campus in Florence, where you can do a first-year experience, a traditional term abroad, or even a full four-year degree based in Florence. D3 Could be a move. However it happens to be that the schools that I’ve been into (BU, NEU, Bing) are all D1. And I’d love to try and get a scholarship. But back to the prospect of D3, the only school on that list I could really see myself into is Emory. The others are just kinda small and I don’t really see that being my thing.

Italian isn’t really something I see myself delving that much more into than the High School level. Just not my calling.

My nephew was also Long Island D1 track/XC. He walked on Hofstra with similar times and had to get them down freshman year to be qualified for the scholarship which was doable.

Those times could work at a variety of schools in D1-D2-D3 - it might be more a question of fit and of course shaving some time off this season

Are you also still doing steeplechase? Events like steeplechase and pole vault are more recruitable because fewer people do them.

However, the NCAA rules just changed which might work in your favor. For example previously D1 track was limited to 13 full scholarships which they divided up. The number of track and XC scholarships allowable has now increased a lot so larger schools with large endowments (read: name brand desirable schools) can afford more runners.

You should probably network with other runners who have been through this process. It’s complicated.

What’s the budget without any loans?

Have you visited any smaller schools? You might at least want to check one out before eliminating it as a possibility.

But Case Western is another school that aquapt mentioned that is similarly-sized to Emory.

If you’re seeking a largish school within 4ish hours western Long Island that also has a varsity track men’s team, these are some schools you may want to investigate, sorted by my guesses as to what your chances for admission might be:

Extremely Likely (80-99+%)

  • Seton Hall (NJ): About 6k undergrads, D1

  • Temple (PA ): About 24k undergrads, D1

  • U. at Albany (NY): About 12k undergrads, D1

  • West Chester (PA ): About 14k undergrads, D2

Likely (60-79%)

  • American (D.C.): About 7900 undergrads, D1, only a likely if you show a lot of demonstrated interest

  • Fordham (NY): About 10k undergrads, D1

  • Rutgers – New Brunswick: About 36k undergrads, D1

  • Syracuse (NY): About 15k undergrads…only a likely if you show demonstrated interest, D1

  • The College of New Jersey: About 7k undergrads, D3

Toss-Up (40-59%)

  • George Washington (D.C.): About 11k undergrads, D1

  • U. of Maryland – College Park: About 30k undergrads. You must apply EA if you want an admission, as about 95% of seats are filled in EA. D1

  • U. of Massachusetts: About 24k undergrads, D1

Lower Probability (20-39%)

Low Probability (less than 20%)

  • Boston College (MA): About 10k undergrads

If you’re willing to go further, or smaller, or without a varsity men’s track team, then there are other options that become possible. And since most of these schools are D1 schools, there’s also the question mark as to whether these schools would suit your athletic needs.

I’m doing steeplechase. Last season I didn’t really get a chance to run fast over 3k because it was the county final and I needed to save for a relay. But I’ll keep it in mind.

Also what do you mean by ā€œName brand desirable schoolsā€?

I think UDel would give some merit, I believe my son was offered $5000 a year with similar stats. My xc/track daughter attended on a higher scholarship and ran club track at UD, loved it (she still holds the record at our HS for the 4 x 4).
