Match me for top CS programs, Chance for UMD-CP [NY resident, 3.4 GPA, 1520 SAT]

Those are good tips, I do plan to get internship after first year of college. I’ll follow your tips

Good luck. First year is extremely difficult from any school. But summer research with a prof isn’t.

During covid when no one hired, my son, an engineer who wanted to be in cars, detailed for a remote company. There are things you can do even if not in the field. Things that show hustle.

If you get first year great. Most get after Junior. But if you can get after sophomore, you’re ahead of the curve. After first year you’ve had little or no direct classes. Both my kids used multiple indeed searches - they email you daily. 2-3 apps a day. So if you get 20 new ones everyday, it’s just pulling where you think gives you best odds. Often in remote places people don’t want to go. My son was in MS his first internship. My nephew, full time, is going to Austin MN. Different gig. But you know what he said - on LinkedIn only 5 apps. Who wants to go to the middle of nowhere? That’s telling….and for a 12 week internship who cares.

Agreed! I’m a big fan of schools with well defined co-ops. OP, with your stats I’d recommend adding U of Cincinnati to your list. They have a great program and since you have OSU on your list, looks like you are open to considering Ohio. Drexel in Philly would be another good option.

Absolutely! Things have been very different these past two years. Anyone’s experience that is older than that should be discounted, especially if it was during the Covid boom times (for tech hiring).

Great! Perhaps do a math or computational finance minor (UMD offers this). Wall Street and Fintech firms are hiring a lot of CS grads, and your interest seems to align well with what they’re looking for.

Thank you, will look into these!

Thank you! I just need to get UMD admission now, haha. It’s so stressful not knowing what will happen in just few months and how it may change your life.
Really appreciate the support here!

But assuming you don’t get UMD, you are not dead in the water. RPI (you said you auto admit) is a top school - and there are many other.

It definitely makes the wait so much easier knowing that I will go to a college I will be happy to attend no matter what happens. I also appreciate this forum, it’s like a cheerleading team of people who don’t know you but still wish you the best. Thank you all for being here!

Coming back to share my early results:
UMass Amherst - waitlisted
Rutgers NB - admitted
Penn state - admitted
Northeastern - admitted to NUin
UMD CP - admitted to L&S
GT - rejected

So far NEU is the winner. I still have 2 early and about 10 regulars to go.

I’m sorry to hear that UMD CS didn’t work out. But glad to know you’re excited about NEU, and that you have several other good choices.

Why would NU IN win over Rutgers and Penn State ?

Check your course flows ? Do they have the courses needed during that first year for CS ?

In the Brown rankings, PSU is 33, Rutgers is 36 and NU 63 for placement.

Not disagreeing with your desire - but given the major just curious what you see vs the other two ?

Thx

That’s actually a good question and thank you for challenging the thought process.

I’m basing this mostly on my parents recommendation.
I mentioned before that both my parents work in the top tech, so they are exposed to many software engineers coming from different universities. They believe that the coop program in NEU prepares engineers well for work. They like the Boston location for opportunities and don’t seem to worry too much about strength of the CS program (they have been teaching me to code since I was 10 and continue teaching me now how to build applications and how corporations work)
CSRankings places Northeastern in top 20 and my parents based on their experience seem to agree with CSRanking more.
They are not opposed to Penn State and Rutgers if that what I’ll choose to do in the end.
I’m still trying not to get too attached to the school so that I’ll assess all my choices before making the final decision

Ok - thanks.

Obviously the schools are all different in many ways. I hope you find the one best for you.

Would UMASS trump Northeastern ?

Food is not ridiculous both my kids struggled with low blood sugar. My Umass co worker said she’d eat there over restaurants TODAY if she could. Alas she lives in Arizona. Food is a legit reason.

And you can co op at most any school. It’s just a few embed it in their ethos. I know some CS kids who have summer interned and do well - one was at Garmin. He’ll be at a biggy in Washington this summer. So even no co op if the job market is ok and that’s unknown, you’d be ok.

If I was getting $400k, I’d apply to Alabama - if your stats are top notch - $70k total :). That’s a lot of extra for you !!!

Those are nice parents

I hope Umass happens for you !!

But even the others put $$ in your pocket vs the $400k.

Here’s PSU co op as an example.

I wish you luck.
