Thanks again, I looked that up and edited my initial post before you posted your response. I’m not sure where my initial misconception came from. I think CU will still be preferred but UBC definitely worth a look.

Per this site, there are:

  • 13-20 nonstop flights per day to Denver (DEN) across 3 airlines from SFO with the flights lasting 2h36m…plus the travel time to Boulder.

  • 9-10 nonstop flights per day to Vancouver (YVR) across 4 airlines from SFO with the flights lasting 2h22m.

  • 8-11 nonstop flights per day to Minneapolis (MSP) across 3 airlines from SFO with the flights lasting 3h40m.

  • 4-5 nonstop flights per day to Calgary (YYC) across 2 airlines from SFO with the flights lasting 2h41m.

Calgary is probably too remote rather than too far.
Boulder is a little easier flight wise as we can fly direct to Denver out of OAK (I think it’s about 5 flights a day on Southwest), which is about a half hour closer to us than SFO. Drive time to CU didn’t look much more than drive time from most any metro airport to anywhere you want to be.
Vancouver is definitely reachable, and a place we’ve been wanting to visit for a while now, so maybe we will add that in for a long weekend at some stage and try get to see UBC while we’re there. Twin Cities too…

Vancouver public transportation is good, and UBC would be easily accessible from YVR by the Skytrain (station in the airport) to a bus that goes straight to UBC.

Last comment about Calgary, but are we talking about the same place with a population of over 1.3 million? It’s not what I would consider remote, but I don’t live in the Bay Area  .

Not “small” but there’s not very much around it… is there?

I’ll have to yield to people with more experience with the geography than me (Calgary’s been on my bucket list…but I haven’t been there yet). But it’s less than 1.5 hours from Banff National Park which is one of the most beautiful national parks in the world, to my eye.

And looking at a map, you can see how Calgary compares to Vancouver vs. Seattle with respect to the amount of “stuff” around them.

How many times can you visit Banff, though?
Seattle is a favorite city and proximity is a plus. If you zoom in on those maps…. There’s a lot more around Vancouver and Seattle than Calgary. IMO. But will present to the kid as an option

We’re all different folks, and what appeals to one may repel another! I spent most of my years in college ensconced on-campus (or certainly in town), apart from my junior year abroad when I did a lot of traveling, which certainly shapes my own perspective. But others may prefer making weekend trips elsewhere, and perhaps that’s your son. Per Google Maps Vancouver is 3h40m to Seattle by car (plus a border crossing). Calgary is 3h9m from Edmonton, though I suspect that in the cold of winter that driving time is extended.

Hope that your kid ends up happy wherever that happens to be!

Interesting - UBC requirements for applicants for that degree:

  • No specific courses required beyond those needed for general admission
  • Video interview
  • Creative test
  • Resume

I wonder what the “creative test” entails.

I looked up some examples. They include things like create a lampshade for the flashlight on your cell phone, and create a pet domicile based on a building you admire. My kid would probably enjoy doing these just for fun!
