Cost Constraints / Budget

Budget: open to any currently

Schools: very loose list. We are really looking for recommendation for reach and targets for him based on his profile.

CMU (Early Decision)

Columbia

Georgia Tech

Cornell

U Michigan

Urbana Champaign

Northeastern University

University of Maryland–College Park

Stony Brook University–SUNY

University of Massachusetts–Amherst

Rutgers

University of Pittsburgh – Pittsburgh Campus

Fordham

WPI

RPI

RIT

I would take Fordham off the list. It’s in a great location, but the others on his list are stronger for both his areas of interest (CS and studio art.)

What about University of Rochester? Their open curriculum might be perfect for him.

It’s a good list, probably reach heavy, but not atypical.

You said he’s interested in CS and art. Is he more interested in just following dual majors or really combining art with CS in graphic design, UI/UX, or game design?

If it’s game design, you have several of the top programs like WPI and RIT, but I don’t see Clark or NYU. You might also consider Drexel and Northeastern.

I like the list as is - and wonder if RIT might be a winner for his interests if not CMU.

Lots of acceptances here though. You could cull the list if he had a safety favorite (like RIT).

Congrats and best of luck.

Take to deep look at the CS courses offered, make sure there is enough depth and breadth to keep him interested.

If you are willing to add Georgia Tech, maybe consider adding UT Austin’s Turing Program.

One potential advantage of the Public schools on your list is the amount of credit he receives could allow for a double major in CS and Art in four years instead of settling for a Minor which often includes watered down (non-major) classes.

He is not interested in game design as of now. He loves art but not sure what CS he will do.

NYU - he said no for campus. Clark and drexel will look into. Northeastern is in the list.

IMO: as an unhooked student from outside MA, he’s unlikely to be admitted to Northeastern if he doesn’t apply ED1 or ED2.

Rest of the list looks good.

Make sure he is familiar with CMU. It’s a “fit” school - so not great for everyone.
