Match Me: Transfer, nontraditional student, 3.93 [college] GPA [MI resident, biology or env sci, <$10k]

Hello, I am a formerly homeschooled (more like unschooled) 34-year-old. I got my GED at 31. I just finished up my Associate’s at a community college, and I am looking to transfer to another college or university. A liberal arts college is my top choice, I really enjoy learning a variety of subjects and I would love to be in that type of environment. I’d prefer to be a short flight away from home, but I am open to a further destination if I feel like it’s a good fit.

Demographics:

  • US Citizen
  • Michigan resident
  • First generation

Budget/Cost Constraints
I am low income and will certainly be applying for aid/scholarships. Budget preferably <10k

Intended Major(s)
I am looking at Biology/Biological Science or Environmental Science programs mostly.

GPA/Test Scores
3.93 final GPA at my community college.
I did not take the ACT/SAT (But I am open to taking either if it will help my chances?)

College Coursework (Transfer Applicants)

  • General education course work: English 102, Philosophy, Logic, Ethics, Public Speaking, Accounting 201/202, Business Law, Intermediate Algebra, Statistics, History
  • Major preparation course work: Microbiology and perhaps Geology would fall into this category.

Extracurriculars

  • I’ve worked consistently since 16, including 13 years at my current position.
  • Babysat for family and friends.
  • Helped take care of my father in the months prior to his death when I was 18.
  • 1 year of bi-weekly animal shelter volunteering.
  • I take Danish lessons online (my writing is much better than my speaking!)

Essays
I am going to say probably 7/10? I tend to be critical of myself, but I don’t feel super confident about anything I have written so far. Still working on these, I hope I can improve them!

LORs

  • Philosophy-Not written yet, confident it will be a 10/10, he is extremely eloquent. He really “gets” me.
  • English-9/10, she related her experience to my own and I think hers is really sincere.
  • Microbiology-7/10, a little generic but good. Hers is just a little impersonal seeming.

Schools

  • Smith College-Ada Comstock Program
  • Mount Holyoke-Frances Perkins Program
  • Bryn Mawr-Katharine E. McBride Program
  • University of Michigan - Flint: I’ve spoken to the transfer liaison; she assured me that I will most likely get in, but she recommended the Accounting program. I am not entirely against it, and I would be able to get 4 semesters tuition-free. I could commute and most of my credits would transfer. Accounting just kind of bores me.

The first three are obvious choices because they offer significant financial aid for nontraditional students, but I know they are reaches.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed that one of these works out. They are designed for students like you🤞🏻

Update: I was waitlisted at Smith and accepted at Mount Holyoke! I’ll be attending MoHo this spring and I couldn’t be happier.
