Match my dandelion child who wants to be a civil engineer, to schools with excellent merit aid [4.0 GPA, 35 ACT]

FAFSA-only schools no longer give a sibling discount but the private schools can do so and some choose to do so!

I think that’s FAFSA - but not necessarily individual colleges (CSS).

They dig deeper than the feds.

They may feel comfortable and welcome, but it is the student that has to adjust, not the school. A friend’s BIL applied to teach at the law school a few years ago and they were still requiring the faculty (at least, not sure about staff) to attest they’d honor the Catholic traditions in their teaching. NOT that the faculty member has to be catholic or even christian, but that they wouldn’t interfere with the fundamentals in their teaching.

I spent some time on campus and not only are there the regular Catholic symbols like crosses and statues of saints around the campus, but in the lobby of the classroom building I took the class in (a big auditorium building) there were all the regalia of I.A. O’Shaughnessy, one of the biggest donors, from his days as a Grand Knight of the KofC. There was no question that this was a Catholic school.

To me it was more like Notre Dame than a Jesuit school (which I find very religious too and think people make a mistake in thinking they are ‘catholic-lite’). It may not be an issue for many non-Catholic students, but it may be, and they should know they aren’t going to change anything that the school requires.

Exactly. To each his own but many Jews I know would feel discomfort. Obviously some Jews attend just like some eat bacon.

I would say that St. Thomas is slightly more religious than St. Olaf or Jesuits, but not much more. It is Catholic, and you will see crucifixes and other Catholic iconography, and there will be some distribution requirements in Religion, but religion will not be pushed on a student.

I would say the vibe at St. Thomas is mainstream and sporty. I have known students of all sorts of religions as well as atheists who have done fine there. For students looking for an artsy, activist, totally secular or super queer vibe, it’s not the right match. Not that they would be treated badly, more that the vibe isn’t right.

He would definitely be in contention for the Leading Scholar Award at Michigan Tech. It’s a great engineering school, but he has to like the cold, and depending on where you live, it might be difficult to get to. Your son’s sport is only a club sport there. S23, who sounds similar but applied test-optional, was in contention for Leading Scholar (full tuition). You must attend an on-campus event (interviews, group problem-solving exercises, individual problem-solving exercises) in January, but with over 1,000 people invited for 30 full scholarships (everyone gets something, but there are 30 full scholarships), the five days of travel didn’t add up for us once he had a clear first choice somewhere else.
